Omschrijving
FORT KIJKDUIN.

Description
FORT KIJKDUIN. Fortification constructed in 1811-1813 as part of the defensive works which were erected by order of Napoleon with the assistance of Jan Blanken Janszn. to defend the newly laid out relocated naval harbour - at that time called 'fort Morland', after the establishment of the Kingdom called 'fort Kijkduin', with subsequently added extensions. The fort, situated to the south-west of the Huisduinen core, lies embedded in the outer dune row, immediately behind the artificially constructed seawall at this location (which was reconstructed and reinforced in 1970 and thereafter at the expense of the western counterscarp wall and other defensive works on this side of the fort).
This fort currently consists of a quadrilateral redoubt, surrounded by a dry moat with a bricked hollow bastion on the north side and a counterscarp gallery with powder magazine on the north and east side; of the two original bastions on the south-west and south-east side only the north-western part of the south-western bastion now remains; to the south-east of the fort one of the three coffres or caponières around the fort still remains, which were originally connected underground with the redoubt.
The redoubt, originally constructed entirely in brick with tapering walls strengthened at the corners with natural stone blocks, contains eight bays which are each internally furnished with large bricked barrel vaults; these are indicated in the two long facades by relieving arches laid in courses, with small square ventilation windows with shutter at the tops of the arches; gunports have been subsequently replaced by doors on the east side; the short facades are virtually entirely blind. The redoubt was provided in 1897 with an armoured observation post with an entirely cast-iron dome, cast in one piece and supplied by Schneider & Co. at Le Creusot.
The counterscarp gallery remaining on the north side - partially rebuilt on the east side, with the adjoining counterscarp wall - is furnished with gunports; the powder magazine added to the counterscarp gallery on the east side, as testified by the natural stone date stone in 1859, is internally spanned by a bricked barrel vault, marked in the facade by a relieving arch laid in four courses, beneath which a segmental arched window, originally with shutter; the facade further contains on the left the arched entrance and at the ends in each case two narrow windows one above the other, all furnished with a natural stone surround, and originally a shutter.
The current entrance to the fort is located on the east side, to which the counterscarp wall has been broken through and furnished with transverse walls. In the northern wall of the redoubt and in the counterscarp gallery are visible in the middle above the indentations the marks where the wooden drawbridge was originally laid, as access to the fort.
The south-eastern coffer, constructed around 1880, consists of an underground part that was at that time connected to the redoubt by means of an underground passage, and a above-ground part with a facade of brick concrete, and is otherwise furnished with an earth layer.
Fort with partially bastioned redoubt, dry moat with hollow bastion, counterscarp gallery and wall with added powder magazine, by this construction characteristic of early and mid-19th-century fortification building and by the later expansions with special elements such as the double coffer and cast-steel observation dome also characteristic of later developments in 19th-century fortification art, furthermore of importance from the perspective of the development of Den Helder as a national defensive post and naval centre as part of the already under Napoleon designed fort system to defend the naval harbour.
Phased development fort with still recognizable principal structure with surrounding wall and associated buildings of general significance due to architectural and military-historical value.
N.B. The earth and concrete covering applied by the Germans during the Second World War is explicitly excluded from the protection. The fort keeper's cottage originally belonging to it on the north side has meanwhile disappeared, as has the drawbridge.
The fort is currently entirely surrounded by a fence; the south-eastern coffer is situated on an adjoining, likewise fenced site.
