Omschrijving

HARSTA STATE.

Waardering

Harsta State.

- vanwege ouderdom en bouwgeschiedenis;

- als hoofdgebouw van een kenmerkende omgrachte en door windsingels beschutte in aanleg 17de-eeuwse Friese State;

- vanwege de architectuurhistorische kwaliteiten van ex- en interieur;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van een aantal waardevolle interieur-onderdelen;

- vanwege de evenwichtige combinatie van een kenmerkende 17de-eeuwse state-structuur met omgracht terrein en windsingels, en een landschappelijke aanleg uit 1832 - een combinatie die in grote lijnen ook tot uitdrukking komt in de bouwgeschiedenis van het hoofdgebouw;

- vanwege de redelijk hoge mate van gaafheid en herkenbaarheid van state en stateterrein;

- vanwege de genealogische geschiedenis die aan hoofdgebouw en stateterrein is verbonden;

- vanwege de visueel-ruimtelijke relatie van het hoofdgebouw met de overige complexonderdelen;

Description

HARSTA STATE. In layout possibly still sixteenth-century, but as far as its present appearance and character are concerned principally an eighteenth/nineteenth-century main building of the historically named country estate. HOUSE on an almost rectangular ground plan, six bays wide, built up in plastered red brick (presumably first quarter of the seventeenth century work with decorative details) and yellow brick (western building mass 1843) and covered by a hipped roof lined with blue Dutch tiles with corner chimneys with cornices. Moulded cornice along the front facade; simple brick gutter on brackets along the rear and side gables. Dressed sandstone plinth; iron wall and balcony anchors, including nine eighteenth-century fleur-de-lis anchors on the front facade. The front facade (south) divided by a central entrance section (presumably 1790) with on either side two respectively three six-pane windows. The entrance framed by Ionic pilasters with cornice with (in relief) the inscription HARSTA STATE; sandstone undersill and bases; double wooden panel doors with windows and semicircular fanlight with carved woodwork; in the spandrels likewise carved woodwork. In the rear and side gables cellar windows with anti-theft bars and four- and six-pane windows. Against the west gable a pear tree in candelabra form. The current FLOOR PLAN reflects the principal building phases of the house: the eastern room, the corridor and the room adjoining it to the west form part of the seventeenth-century layout. This part is built in red brick. The westernmost part was built after the demolition of the left wing in 1843. This part is built in yellow brick. The original hall is narrowed to the current corridor. On the left in the corridor is the access to the stair to the roof truss. The roof structure consisting of two storeys still contains four sixteenth-century Dutch roof truss members reused at the time of the 1843 alteration. On the occasion of the 1996-1997 restoration an opening was made between the two western rooms and the bed alcove wall and the chimney mantel were removed. The small cellar on the north-west side has been filled in with displaced rubble. The lowered corridor on the north-east side was raised. In the INTERIOR are among other things of importance: the late eighteenth-century Louis XVI decoration of the eastern room with wall panelling (boiserie) with carved garlands, medallions and other embellishments, the display niches with cupboards on either side of the mantelpiece (one of which with a sliding panel), the panelled cupboards in the corner, the windowsills and folding blinds and the matching framed panel doors; furthermore the wooden ceiling with central and corner rosettes, the grey-marble mantelpiece with mirror and mantelshelf with floral motif and sandstone floor plate with a quarter-round profile at the corners. In the corridor the marble tiles and panel doors. In the other rooms on the ground floor among other things the beam ceilings, windowsills and folding blinds and the panel doors.

Valuation

Harsta State. Main building of the historically named country estate of general cultural and architectural-historical importance:

- because of age and building history;

- as main building of a characteristic moated and by wind-shelters protected in layout seventeenth-century Frisian State;

- because of the architectural-historical qualities of exterior and interior;

- because of the presence of a number of valuable interior components;

- because of the balanced combination of a characteristic seventeenth-century state structure with moated terrain and wind-shelters, and a landscaped layout from 1832 - a combination which in broad outline is also expressed in the building history of the main building;

- because of the reasonable high degree of intactness and recognisability of estate and estate terrain;

- because of the genealogical history connected to main building and estate terrain;

- because of the visual-spatial relationship of the main building with the other complex components;

- because of the particularly beautiful location in the open Frisian landscape, in the vicinity of the protected terp village Hogebeintum.
