Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Two-sided built-up corner building, constructed around 1920 as a bank building for "De Nationale Bank" in Amsterdam School style. The building currently has an office function. During recent adaptation for this purpose, the original finishes and character have largely been preserved.
Description
Building constructed from red brick in Flemish bond on an approximately square floor plan, two storeys and a roof truss storey high.
On either side of the tower-like corner section are four-bay-wide side facades. Beneath the windows on the ground floor is a facade-wide, continuous sandstone sill band with relief inscription concerning banking activities; on the upper storey a similar band the width of the window sections.
The wall piers between the windows consist of vertical brickwork with basement and capital-like, horizontal brickwork. The parapet between ground floor and upper storey is similarly executed in vertical brickwork the width of the window sections.
Directly above the upper storey windows is a far-projecting wooden cornice with stepped-out ceiling. The roof cornice above this is austere and sober. All windows are executed in wood with tilt-and-turn lower sashes and upper sashes with diagonal glazing bars. Below the left windows on Korte Kerkstraat is a barred basement window. To the left of the facade on Korte Kerkstraat is a recessed narrow facade section containing a service entrance accessible via a brick stair. Above this door a canopy and a fanlight with diamond-shaped glazing bars, above it a diamond-shaped window at the location of the stairwell.
The rectangular tower section contains recessed facade fields with parapets in vertical brickwork between the windows; on Nieuwstraat the public entrance is incorporated in this bay. The wooden entrance door is reinforced with iron fittings. The windows in the tower section correspond to the design of the windows in the side facades. On the second storey of the tower section are pivot windows with glazing bars; in the roof storey very narrow attic windows with arrow-point-like glazing bars. The tower corners are formed with vertical stepping, creating projecting facade fields extending almost to the roof cornice, terminated by facade cornices. Like the reveals of the public entrance, the stepped corner brickwork of the tower section is finished with sandstone decorations with roll motifs.
Above the attic window in the tower a iron flagpole holder with roll motif decorations. In the small, free rear facade section are at basement level three very austere windows and a double access door. On the ground floor two composite window frames with calving. On the first storey two four-light frames with regular, fine glazing bars in a plastered field. Otherwise it is a simple fair-faced brickwork facade.
Both side facades and the tower structure are provided with gabled roofs, covered with red Super Improved Dutch (SOVH) tiles.
Rich interior from around 1920 in the style of the Amsterdam School. Via the public entrance in the tower section is a small, octagonal hall accessible which via a corridor provides access to the octagonal central public hall with lantern. The office spaces are grouped around this central hall.
The corridor between the two halls has green decorative brickwork in yellow brick walls and a stepped-up ceiling.
The central hall with staircase is the most characteristic space in the building. The floor is provided with yellow tilework with a band of brown/black tiles with white accents in the form of stripes. The walls are constructed from green glazed brick to the top edge of the door frames, on a plinth of vertical brickwork from black glazed stone. Otherwise the hall walls are executed in yellow brick. The bent-up openings to office spaces possess a green-black band in the crown. The access doors to the office spaces are glazed and executed in light oak. The office spaces are generally soberly finished with the exception of the director's office next to the stairwell, whose walls are provided with raised panelling incorporating a flat marble fireplace between fluted pilasters. The counter work space is located in L-shape around the central hall. This space is finished in a businesslike manner; the current two counters are executed in black natural stone with original cabinetry under one counter. Also along one short wall fixed cabinetry.
At the base of the lantern is a heavy moulding with ball and volute motif decorations. Between heavy consoles are small windows of the upper storey corridor incorporated in the frieze of this moulding. The lantern with coloured glazing is executed in eight sections with a ventilation element at the top. From the central hall an oak staircase leads to the upper storey. On the upper storey there is a circulation corridor around the central hall to which the office spaces are situated. Generally the spaces on the upper storey are finished with sober and austere plaster and paintwork. Some more important rooms are provided with very sober stucco ceilings and raised panelling in which cabinetry is incorporated. The original doors are soberly decorated in the style of the building. On the upper storey corridor a side stair from the service entrance on Korte Kerkstraat arrives. Nearby a sober closable stair leads to the attic where, among other things, a covered roof structure and soberly finished "tower room" are located.
In the basement, accessible via the main staircase, are a service space at the rear facade and a vault room with LIPS vault door and barred grille behind on the Nieuwstraat side. This vault room provides access to a second space. The stair to the basement is executed with a handrail with elegant iron railwork.
Valuation
Bank building of general importance due to architectural historical values of both the exterior and interior. As an almost unaltered stylistic example of exceptional rarity value.
