Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Water tower constructed in 1936 in business expressionist style for the N.V. Waterleidingmaatschappij Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen with two concrete flat-bottomed reservoirs. The site with the tower, located far outside the city centre on an access road, is closed off at the street by a sober entrance gate.
Description
The 61 metre high tower on a twelve-sided plan is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond. The shaft is vertically accentuated by pilaster-like elements. Heavy pilasters run through to the reservoir cladding, light pilasters accompany a vertical bay in which a series of steel eight-pane windows are placed.
The transition between shaft and reservoir cladding is executed as a concrete band. Just below this band between the main pilasters are groups of three steel windows. The reservoir cladding itself is very soberly executed with only a few small windows and has scarcely a larger diameter than the shaft. The transition to the dome roof is formed by a concrete band and a concrete gutter between which per facade section three six-pane windows are placed. The copper-covered dome is provided with a four-sided lantern and a copper-covered roof.
The entrance to the tower is provided with a sober brick surround.
The brickwork of the shaft is largely self-supporting and encloses the supporting structure of the reservoirs which consists of a cross of concrete column-pairs: four placed in the centre of the shaft and four pairs placed in the heavy facade pilasters, connected to each other at regular intervals by coupling beams. The middle columns support the small, lower reservoir of 300 m³ and pass through it upwards to the large reservoir of approximately 1000 m³. The outer columns pass along the lower reservoir through to the bottom of the upper reservoir. The lower reservoir possesses a flat concrete cover which also serves as a walkway. The upper reservoir is double-walled and possesses a vaulted cover on the central section.
The facade brickwork is executed on the interior side in yellow stone.
With the exception of the columns and coupling beams the shaft is completely empty; a sober staircase along the facades leads to the lower reservoir. A narrow ladder leads from there to a walkway around the upper reservoir. The concrete dome roof contains a completely open space.
The central open section of the cellars originally contained installations. The remaining part of the cellar is accessible via a shaft, closed off by a steel plate.
The simple iron entrance gate at the street is placed between built-in columns with an adjoining short, low wall on which an iron gate, closed off by another built-in column.
Valuation
Water tower of general importance because of cultural-historical values as an example of the technical developments in water tower construction and of ensemble value because of its importance as a characteristic landmark and for the appearance of the region.
