Omschrijving onderdeel 3: Voormalige DIENSTWONING.
Inleiding
De voormalige dienstwoning in Neo-Hollandse Renaissancestijl, oorspronkelijk behorend bij Kasteel Oud Wassenaar, is in 1876-77 gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect C. Muysken. Omstreeks 1920 is het pand in opdracht van J.A. v.d. Star verbouwd door de architect J.J. Brandes.
Omschrijving
De samengestelde bouwmassa van het pand onder haaks op elkaar geplaatste zadeldaken met trapgevels had oorspronkelijk een T-vormige plattegrond die door latere aanbouwen aan de zijgevels is vergroot. De vleugel evenwijdig aan de straat heeft een hoog zadeldak tussen twee trapgevels, het zadeldak boven de vleugel daarachter heeft een lagere noklijn. De daken zijn gedekt met gesmoorde verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De in rode baksteen opgetrokken gevels zijn rijk gedecoreerd met in gele baksteen uitgevoerde geblokte hoeklisenen, lijsten rond gevelopeningen en trapgevel-ornamenten. (Deels vernieuwde) vensters en glasdeuren met roedenverdeling onder rond- en korfbogen. In de boogvelden siermetselwerk. In de voorgevel (noordwest) twee vensters, in het dakschild twee dakkapellen en op de nok van het dak een grote schoorsteenpartij. Tegen de eindgevel aan de zuidwestzijde een lagere uitbouw onder zadeldak met trapgevel. De gevel van de dwarsvleugel is omstreeks 1920 uitgebreid met een rechthoekige erkerpartij onder loggia. De trapgevel aan de zuidoostzijde is voorzien van een natuurstenen cartouche met de jaartallen 1876-1877. De aanbouw aan de noordoostzijde telt twee bouwlagen onder een steekkap.
Waardering
De voormalige DIENSTWONING is van algemeen belang vanwege cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde alsook vanwege de functionele en stilistische samenhang met kasteel Oud Wassenaar. De situering aan de Schouwweg herinnert aan de lokatie van het oude huis Oud Wassenaar. De vormgeving in Neo-Renaissancestijl is overeenkomstig de bouwstijl van het kasteel. Het pand is redelijk gaaf en herkenbaar in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering. De dienstwoning vormt met de pergola een beeldbepalend ensemble aan de Schouwweg.

Introduction
The former caretaker's cottage in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style, originally belonging to Kasteel Oud Wassenaar, was built in 1876-77 after a design by the architect C. Muysken. Around 1920 the building was altered on the instructions of J.A. v.d. Star by the architect J.J. Brandes.
Description
The combined building mass of the structure under gabled roofs placed at right angles to each other with stepped gables originally had a T-shaped floor plan which was enlarged by later additions to the side facades. The wing parallel to the street has a high gabled roof between two stepped gables, the gabled roof above the wing behind it has a lower ridge line. The roofs are covered with smoothed improved Dutch tiles. The former CARETAKER'S COTTAGE is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value as well as because of the functional and stylistic coherence with Kasteel Oud Wassenaar. The location on the Schouwweg recalls the location of the old house Oud Wassenaar. The design in Neo-Renaissance style is in accordance with the building style of the castle. The building is reasonably intact and recognizable in main form, material use and detailing. The caretaker's cottage forms with the pergola a visually prominent ensemble on the Schouwweg.
