Inleiding
Het STANDBEELD van Schaepman is in opdracht van de Rooms Katholieke kerk van Tubbergen vervaardigd. Het beeld is geplaatst op de Tubberger Es en op 11 augustus 1927 door Mgr. dr. W.H. Nolens onthuld.
De oprichting van dit standbeeld past in de nationalistische traditie waarin "de zonen van het volk" vereeuwigd worden. Als zodaning is dit het eerste standbeeld in het oosten van het land. Het vormde dan ook een belangrijk voorbeeld voor andere grote standbeelden.
Dr. H.J.A.M. Schaepman (geboren op de Eeshof te Tubbergen 1844, gestorven in Rome 1903) was priester, politicus en letterkundige. Hij leverde een belangrijke bijdrage aan de totstandkoming van de Rooms-Katholieke Staatspartij en had als eerste katholiek zitting in de Tweede Kamer. Herman Schaepman genoot nationale faam als dichter van meestal sterk retorische lyriek en epiek.
Het beeld is ontworpen door August Falise. Het is van exceptionele grootte, ook binnen diens oeuvre. Hij heeft ongeveer 40 stand- en borstbeelden gemaakt, waarvan vele binnen de Heilig Hart cultus (Benedictus, Leo III). Naar zijn ontwerp staan in Eschede het beeld van mgr. dr. Alphons Ariëns (ES 522) en in Den Bosch dat van Van Rossum, om slechts twee voorbeelden te noemen.
Het monument is betaald uit een legaat, groot f 30.000,-, van pastoor Geerdink, goede vriend van Schaepman: "De man van brons in brons vereeuwigd op Tubbergse grond". Het brons is gegoten door de Fonderie Nationale des Bronzes te Brussel. Het natuursteen voor sokkel en basement is geleverd door "de Nederlandse natuursteenhandel P.J.M. van Stokkum". De constructeur was H. Wiegers uit Albergen.
Omschrijving
Bronzen beeld ten voeten uit en meer dan levensgroot, voorstellende H.J.A.M. Schaepman, op hoge met graniet beklede sokkel. Aan de vier zijden van de sokkel staan teksten.
Het beeld staat op een ruim bemeten podium dat over de volle breedte via een trap te betreden is. Aan weerszijden van de trap twee pijlers met bollen van gewassen grindbeton. Aan de achterzijde tegen een haag twee zitbanken van hetzelfde materiaal.
Waardering
Momument met standbeeld van cultuur-, architectuurhistorisch en stedebouwkundig belang:
- als aandenken aan een, voor de emancipatie van het katholieke volksdeel, belangrijke figuur

Introduction
The STATUE of Schaepman was commissioned by the Roman Catholic church of Tubbergen. The statue was placed on the Tubberger Es and was unveiled on 11 August 1927 by Mgr. dr. W.H. Nolens.
The erection of this statue fits within the nationalist tradition in which "the sons of the people" are immortalised. As such, it was the first statue in the east of the country. It thus formed an important example for other major statues.
Dr. H.J.A.M. Schaepman (born at the Eeshof at Tubbergen 1844, died in Rome 1903) was a priest, politician and man of letters. He made an important contribution to the establishment of the Roman Catholic State Party and was the first Catholic to sit in the Second Chamber. Herman Schaepman enjoyed national fame as a poet of mostly strongly rhetorical lyric and epic poetry.
The statue was designed by August Falise. It is of exceptional size, even within his oeuvre. He made approximately 40 standing and bust portraits, many of which were within the Sacred Heart cult (Benedictus, Leo III). According to his design, the statue of Mgr. dr. Alphons Ariëns stands in Eschede (ES 522) and that of Van Rossum in Den Bosch, to mention only two examples.
The monument was paid for from a legacy of f 30,000,- from pastor Geerdink, a good friend of Schaepman: "The man of bronze in bronze immortalised on Tubbergse soil". Description
Bronze statue in full length and more than life-size, representing H.J.A.M. Schaepman, on a high pedestal clad in granite. On all four sides of the pedestal there are inscriptions.
The statue stands on a spaciously proportioned platform which can be entered over its full width via a staircase. On either side of the staircase two pillars with spheres of washed aggregate concrete. On the rear side against a hedge two benches of the same material.
Valuation
Monument with statue of cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning significance:
