The register's description

Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The former municipal building of Tubbergen was built in 1930-31 to the design of H.W. Valk. His competition design in traditionalist style was selected as the best by a jury chaired by prof. ir. M.J. Grandpré-Molière.

Historicising elements (stepped gables, glazing bars) refer to the old-Dutch town hall style. The typical roof turret betrays the Scandinavian influence that the architecture of government buildings underwent shortly before the Second World War. The council chamber was located on the upper floor behind the series of roof dormers, in the open roof truss structure. With this, the design references both a national (cf. Prinsenzaal The Hague) and a regional (Los Hoes) tradition. In Sleen (Drenthe), a town hall designed by A. Baart and put into use in 1938 has a strongly comparable traditionalist design. On 28 February 1963 the upper storey of the side wing burned out. In 1971 the town hall was renovated. The council chamber was fitted out with a public gallery, and a wedding room was built. During the renovation, it was already assumed that the town hall might eventually lose its original function. Since 28 June 1984 the building has had a catering function.

The building is orientated diagonally across the Grotestraat, which bends at this point, near the Raadhuisplein. The town hall was deliberately set back to make the bend in the Grotestraat clearer for traffic. Remarkable is the material from which the building is constructed: profiled flame-kiln brick.

Description

The former municipal building is constructed from an L-shaped ground plan over two storeys, with the upper storey partly placed under the roof, under a gabled roof covered with slate in diminishing courses. The gable ends have stepped gables. The building stands on a plinth. On the ridge stands a copper-clad roof turret, consisting of a hexagonal onion dome with a square spire, crowned with an ornamental iron weathervane.

The diagonal position is accentuated by the north-west corner closed off on the ground floor, with a natural stone corbel on the storey division. On the corbel, the coat of arms of Tubbergen is placed diagonally in the concave curve.

The long façade (W) has four identical bays, separated by rainwater downpipes. On the ground floor of each bay are two wooden cross windows in old-Dutch style. The lower windows are fitted with shutters. The cross windows are 36-pane, the fanlights are provided with coloured glass. On the upper floor one such cross window is placed in each bay, albeit with raised fanlight. In place of the mudsill, which on the upper floor coincides with the wall-top moulding, four four-pane small windows are inserted. The part of these tall windows that projects above the wall plane is fitted in a roof dormer. This has a gabled roof and in the gable top a herringbone-pattern boarding. In the bay to the right of centre the cross window is executed as a glass door. A stoep has been placed in front of it.

The gable end (N) has on the ground floor the same two cross windows as the bays of the long façade. Also on the upper floor the same raised cross window as in the long façade, but not fitted in a roof dormer but in the gable top. The façade of the extension under a lean-to roof, in the angle of the L-shape, lies in the same plane as the short façade. On the right a recessed double glass door is placed with a stoep. On the left a striking bay window, with centrally a recessed 12-pane sliding window with 12-pane fanlight, flanked by two 6-pane sash windows. On the upper floor on the right a vertical and on the left a horizontal 12-pane window.

The interior of the former municipal building is partly still in its original state.

Valuation

Former municipal building of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning significance by reason of:

- the original function

- the striking use of material and the stylistic references.

- the distinctive location in the bend of the Grotestraat

- the intactness of the exterior
