Inleiding

(Enschede) in neo-renaissancistische bouwstijl ontworpen.

Introduction

Built in 1887 and 1888 on commission of textile manufacturer D.B.H. Jordaan: MANSION/OFFICE "Villa Jordaan" with COACH HOUSE at the now disappeared factory site. Designed by architect Gerrit Beltman sr. (Enschede) in neo-renaissance style. Altered on the rear side. Balustrades and decorative borders above roof edges of verandas partially removed.

Description

The mansion is cellared and built above a grey-plastered plinth with horizontal false joints over one and a half and two storeys under a composite roof. The strongly overhanging roof edge is carried by elegantly formed consoles. The coach house is built against a corner of the house, under a bent hipped roof covered with grey boulet tiles. The front facade of the coach house (S) stands at right angles to the right side gable of the residence (E). The facades of both the coach house and the house are built in dark brown brick and on the house are provided with white-plastered corner pilasters with false joints. The house consists of a central section with a storey and two L-shaped side wings with mezzanine, covered by three parallel hipped roofs, with at the front on either side of the central section a transverse gable in the form of a hipped roof. At the rear there is a later single-storey extension.

The central section projects in the front facade (S) with respect to the side wings, for which verandas are placed under lean-to roofs with roof leather, carried by cast-iron worked columns.

Part of the cast-iron balustrades which were located between the columns has been preserved. In the middle above the veranda is a pediment with relief within it and along the roof edge the decorative border is still present. The central projection in the front facade is articulated on the ground floor by a three-light window with fanlights in a plastered frame of pilasters with round arches in rustication with keystones. A profile in the grey plinth indicates the basement and ornamental wall anchors between and beside the arches complete the whole. Above a profiled string course with diamond heads, which runs across all facades, is a three-light window with arched fanlights in a plastered frame with a basement, head moulding and pediment. The entire projection is terminated by a string course with diamond heads, gutter moulding and pediment with relief, in which a medallion with a head stands centrally. In the side facades (E and W) the windows are placed under segmental and herringbone arches. The main entrance, consisting of a double door with windows, wrought-iron grilles with scroll motifs, wooden mouldings and rosettes and a fanlight, is placed in the right side gable (E), directly to the right of the projection (the short leg of the L). In the left side gable (W) there is at the same position - but now to the left of the projection - also a door. The mezzanine is articulated by closed rectangular windows with and without half columns, some of which are set in a block frame.

The gable walls above the projections of the side wings are provided with decorative trusses. The rear facade (N) has been altered on the ground floor, among other things by the new extension. The mezzanine of the northwestern side wings is plastered on the rear side and the roof has been changed to a hipped roof. In the hall of the residence a number of original components are still preserved, including a profiled elliptical arch on corner pillars, a stair newel with balustrade and the ceiling.

Valuation

The mansion is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- on account of the neo-renaissance style with elaborate details

- as an early example of a design in the oeuvre of Gerrit Beltman sr.

- on account of the significance of textile manufacturer Jordaan for the socio-economic history of Haaksbergen

- on account of the prominent location in the centre of Haaksbergen
