Het HUIS VAN BEWARING heeft een hoog frontgebouw in de Marktstraat, waarin op de begane grond de entree en enkele dienstruimten zijn ondergebracht. Op de verdieping een hoge (voormalige) kerkzaal met glas-in-lood vensters, waarboven een tweede etage met kleine vensters. Achter dit frontgebouw bevindt zich het cellencomplex, dat met twee vleugels is uitgevoerd, die elkaar in de as van de hoofdentree ontmoeten. Eén vleugel is evenwijdig aan de Marktstraat achter genoemde dienstwoningen gelegen, heeft enkelzijdig drie lagen met een galerij-ontsluiting. De andere vleugel sluit daarop met een stompe hoek aan, heeft twee lagen cellen met een galerij en een derde met een zij-corridor. In de oksel zijn ruimten voor bewaarders ingericht, terwijl de armen aan de buitenzijde twee kanten van een ruime luchtplaats omsluiten. De andere twee kanten van deze plaats worden door hoge muren afgesloten, waarvan er een grenst aan het gebouw van de rechtbank.
Buiten het eenvoudige hoofdvolume van het gebouw steken de werkplaatsen bij de ene vleugel en een uitbreiding aan de zijde van de Marktstraat, die de cellenvleugel daar verbindt met de voormalige dienstwoningen. Aan deze uitbreiding werd een luchtplaats opgeofferd.
De gevels zijn uitgevoerd in baksteen, aangevuld met hardsteen. Hardstenen banden geleden de gevels van het kubische frontgebouw, terwijl het materiaal terugkeert in de onderdorpels van de celramen, in dekplaten van terreinscheidingen en als accenten op de hoeken van verschillende gevelvlakken. In het interieur is de soliditeit niet minder. De kozijnen in het frontgebouw zijn van beton, met aan de binnenzijde gezoet hardstenen onderdorpels en vensterbanken. Alle deurkozijnen, de traceringen van bovenlichten en het plaatwerk waarmee de celdeuren zijn beslagen, zijn uitgevoerd in staal. De bovenlichten zijn bezet met kleine rechthoekige glazen bouwstenen, die ook in de gevelvensters terugkeren. Vloeren en wanden in gangen en galerijen zijn betegeld. De vloeren zijn uitgevoerd in gewapend beton, waaraan bij de galerijen nokken zijn gegoten voor de bevestiging van de licht gedecoreerde ijzeren balustrades. De muren tussen de cellen zijn uitgevoerd als spouwmuren. De trappen in het cellenblok zijn gemaakt in staal, die in het frontgebouw zijn opgebouwd uit granieten treden. Door de ontsluiting van de cellenvleugels met een zij-corridor zijn de verkeersruimten goed verlicht.

The HOUSE OF DETENTION has a tall front building on Marktstraat, in which on the ground floor the entrance and some service rooms are housed. On the upper floor a high (former) chapel with stained glass windows, above which a second storey with small windows. Behind this front building is the cell complex, which is executed with two wings, which meet in the axis of the main entrance. One wing is parallel to Marktstraat behind mentioned service dwellings, has single-sided three storeys with a gallery access. The other wing adjoins this at a blunt angle, has two storeys of cells with a gallery and a third with a side corridor. In the corner spaces for guards are arranged, while the arms enclose two sides of a spacious exercise yard on the outside. The other two sides of this yard are enclosed by high walls, one of which borders on the courthouse building.

In the interior the solidity is no less. The window frames in the front building are of concrete, with smoothed stone undersills and windowsills on the inside. All door frames, the traceries of fanlights and the plateware with which the cell doors are fitted, are executed in steel. The fanlights are fitted with small rectangular glass building blocks, which also return in the facade windows. Floors and walls in corridors and galleries are tiled. The floors are executed in reinforced concrete, to which ridges are cast at the galleries for the attachment of the lightly decorated iron balustrades. The walls between the cells are executed as cavity walls. The stairs in the cell block are made in steel, those in the front building are built up from granite steps. Through the access of the cell wings with a side corridor the circulation spaces are well lit.
