Inleiding
Met elementen van de Um 1800-stijl in opdracht van R. Nagelschmidt, siroopfabrikant te Meerssen, in 1922 gebouwde VILLA genaamd "Bliss". De villa is gesitueerd in een geaccidenteerd terrein.
Omschrijving
De villa heeft een in de lengterichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond, telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een gebogen schilddak met Hollandse pannen. Het gebruikte materiaal is baksteen voorzien van pleister- en stucwerk. De entree bevindt zich in de linkerzijgevel in een natuurstenen portiek afgedekt met koper, en met aan weerszijden pilasters met hierop een schelpdecoratie. In het middendeel van de frontgevel van de eerste bouwlaag een halfronde erker met hierop en balkon met gesloten stenen balustrade en decoratieve waterspuwers. Geveldecoraties: onder andere frontons en pilasters met cannelures. In de frontgevel rechthoekige houten vensters met gelede bovenlichten en een ovaal glas-in-lood venster. In de oostgevel rondboogvormige vensters en deur, en een rond venster in glas-in-lood. Vensters tweede bouwlaag met bovenlichten met een stervormige geleding. In de achtergevel een serre met hierop een balkon. In de westgevel een kleine erker met koperen dak.

Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer van belang: in het portaal de vloer en wanden bekleedt met marmer; de houten schuifdeur met hierin glazen panelen. De grote hal met parketvloer en hoge houten lambrizering, en met aan de rechterzijde een grote haardpartij in zwart en rood gewolkte marmer. De overige deuren van de eerste bouwlaag hebben deels glazen panelen met hierin een stermotief. Hang- en sluitwerk in koper. De houten trap loopt door tot de zolderverdieping en heeft een iets lagere lambrizering, dan die in de hal.
Waardering
De villa gebouwd in opdracht van een grote siroopfabrikant is cultuurhistorisch van belang als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. De villa bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de toegepaste ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent deze villa aan zijn situering en hiermee van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van de kern Meerssen. Het pand is tenslotte van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en een deel van het interieur en de zeldzaamheid.

A VILLA called "Bliss" built in 1922 by order of R. Nagelschmidt, syrup factory owner at Meerssen, with elements of the Around 1800 style. The villa is situated in an uneven terrain.

The villa has a rectangular plan placed lengthwise, comprises two storeys and is covered with a curved hipped roof with Dutch tiles. The material used is brick furnished with plaster and stucco work. The entrance is located in the left side gable in a natural stone portico covered with copper, and with pilasters on either side bearing shell decoration. In the middle section of the front gable on the first storey a semicircular oriel with above it a balcony with closed stone balustrade and decorative water spouts. Gable decorations: among other things pediments and pilasters with flutings. In the front gable rectangular wooden windows with mullioned fanlights and an oval stained-glass window. In the east gable round-arch windows and door, and a round window in stained glass. Windows on the second storey with fanlights with star-shaped mullioning. In the rear gable a conservatory with above it a balcony. In the west gable a small oriel with copper roof.

Of the INTERIOR the following are of note: in the hall the floor and walls clad with marble; the wooden sliding door with glazed panels therein. The large hallway with parquet floor and tall wooden wainscoting, and on the right side a large fireplace surround in black and red marbled marble. The remaining doors on the first storey have partly glazed panels with a star motif therein. Hinges and fastenings in copper. The wooden staircase runs through to the attic storey and has somewhat lower wainscoting than that in the hallway.
Valuation
The villa built by order of a large syrup factory owner is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of a socio-economic development. The villa possesses architectural-historical value because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and the applied ornamental work. This villa derives ensemble value from its setting and thereby possesses special significance for the appearance of this part of the centre of Meerssen. The building is finally of general importance on the basis of the architectural integrity of its exterior and part of its interior and its rarity.
