Inleiding
Met elementen van de Neo Gotiek rond 1910 gebouwde GRAFKAPEL voor de familie Kleuters-Janssen.
De begraafplaats is omstreeks 1880 in gebruik genomen en lag toen buiten de bebouwde kom. Thans is de begraafplaats in de bebouwing opgenomen. Aan de zuidzijde van de begraafplaats staat de grafkapel van de familie Kleuters-Janssen.
De grafkapel werd vervaardigd door "J. Cremers-Vermeulen Maastricht"
Omschrijving
De grafkapel heeft een in de dwarsrichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond, telt een bouwlaag en wordt afgedekt door een zadeldak uitgevoerd in hardsteen. Het betreft een grafkapel met een spitsboogvormige toegang, geflankeerd door twee zuilen en twee pilasters van de Corinthische orde. De grafkelder voor de kapel heeft een hekwerk bestaande uit hardstenen obeliskvormige kolommen verbonden met een smeedijzeren ketting. Het dakje wordt bekroond met enkele pinakels en een kruis. In het INTERIEUR is onder meer van belang een hardstenen altaartafel. In de achterwand van de kapel bevindt zich een spitsboogvormig blind venster.
Waardering
De grafkapel van de familie Kleuters-Janssen is cultuurhistorisch van belang als een bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. De kapel bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege haar belang voor de regionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en vanwege de bijzondere samenhang tussen ex- en interieur. Ensemblewaarde ontleent deze grafkapel aan haar situering op de zuidzijde van de begraafplaats van Meerssen en daarmee van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit gedeelte van Meerssen. Description
The funerary chapel has a rectangular ground plan oriented in the transverse direction, comprises one storey and is covered by a gabled roof executed in ashlar. It is a funerary chapel with a pointed-arch entrance, flanked by two columns and two pilasters of the Corinthian order. The burial vault in front of the chapel has a railing consisting of ashlar obelisk-shaped columns connected by wrought-iron chains. The roof is crowned with several pinnacles and a cross. In the INTERIOR is among other things an ashlar altar table of importance. In the rear wall of the chapel is a pointed-arch blind window.
