Inleiding
GRAFKAPEL in Neoclassicistische trant, gebouwd omstreeks 1900 door "E. Salu sculpt. Bruxelles" in opdracht van de met de Maastrichtse familie Regout nauw verwante uit Meerssen afkomstige familie Brouwers. De kapel ligt op de eertijds buiten de bebouwde kom gelegen rond 1880 in gebruik genomen Rooms Katholieke begraafplaats van Meerssen. De eerste bijzetting in de kapel dateert van 1898.
Omschrijving:
Haaks op het pad gelegen grafkapel op rechthoekige plattegrond, opgetrokken uit hardsteen en gedekt door een flauw hellend zadeldak van hardstenen platen; plaatijzeren toegangsdeur met glasraam en siersmeedwerk.
De grafkapel is ontworpen als prostylos, bestaande uit een rechthoekige cella op basement met florale motieven; aan de voorzijde twee zuilen met composiet kapitelen die rusten op een doorlopende plint; latei met opschrift "Familie Paul Brouwers" en door een kruis bekroond driehoekig fronton met hoekacroteria, bloemenkrans en bloemtakken.
In de achter- en zijgevels een respectievelijk twee rondboogvensters met kapiteeltjes en tandversiering en glas-in-lood ramen met eveneens florale motieven. In het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang een marmeren altaar en, tegen de wanden, marmeren memorieplaten ter herinnering aan de bijzettingen.
Waardering De grafkapel van de familie Brouwers is cultuurhistorisch van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling; zij bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens haar belang voor de regionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en vanwege de bijzondere samenhang tussen ex- en interieur. Ensemblewaarde ontleent deze grafkapel aan haar markante situering aan de zuidzijde van de begraafplaats van Meerssen waarmee het gebouw van betekenis is voor het aanzien van dit gedeelte van Meerssen. De kapel is tenslotte van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van ex- en interieur en de zeldzaamheid.

FUNERARY CHAPEL in Neoclassical style, built around 1900 by "E. Salu sculpt. Bruxelles" on behalf of the Brouwers family from Meerssen, closely related to the Maastricht family Regout. The chapel is located on the Roman Catholic cemetery of Meerssen, which came into use around 1880 when it lay outside the built-up area. The first burial in the chapel dates from 1898.
Description:
Funetary chapel perpendicular to the path, on a rectangular ground plan, constructed of ashlar and covered by a gently sloping gabled roof of stone slabs; sheet-iron access door with glass pane and ornamental ironwork.
The funerary chapel is designed as a prostyle, consisting of a rectangular cella on a basement with floral motifs; at the front two columns with composite capitals resting on a continuous plinth; lintel with inscription "Familie Paul Brouwers" and crowned by a cross and a triangular pediment with corner acroteria, floral wreath and flower sprays.
In the rear and side facades respectively two round-arched windows with capitals and tooth moulding and stained-glass windows likewise with floral motifs. In the INTERIOR are among other things a marble altar and, against the walls, marble memorial plaques in remembrance of the burials.
Valuation The funerary chapel of the Brouwers family is of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a typological development; it possesses architectural-historical value on account of its importance for the regional history of architecture, on account of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and because of the particular coherence between exterior and interior. This funerary chapel derives ensemble value from its striking location on the south side of the cemetery of Meerssen with which the building is of significance for the appearance of this part of Meerssen. The chapel is finally of general importance on the grounds of the architectural integrity of exterior and interior and its rarity.
