Inleiding
In Tradionalisme in 1932 naar een ontwerp van architect F.P.J. Peutz uit Heerlen gebouwde KATHOLIEKE KERK ter ere van de H. Theresia. De kerk is markant gesitueerd in een geaccidenteerd terrein in de kern Ransdaal. De kerk werd door de parochianen van Ransdaal gebouwd.
Omschrijving
De parochiekerk heeft een veelhoekige plattegrond en is ten opzichte van de straatzijde in dwarsrichting geplaatst. De daken worden gedekt met zadeldaken, lessenaarsdaken en gewelfde tentdaken met Tuiles du Nord. Het kerkgebouw kenmerkt zich door een langgerektheid die benadrukt wordt door het ontbreken van complete kruisarmen en door de toepassing van zadeldaken met noklijn in dwarsrichting ten opzichte van de straatzijde. De kerk bezit een smal langgerekt middenschip met tot achter de absis doorlopende zijbeuken onder lessenaarsdak. De zadeldaken van schip en absis liggen verzonken tussen kopgevels met schouderstukken. Absis onder twee in hoogte verspringende zadeldaken.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is Craubergersteen, hardsteen en mergel. Geprofileerde plint met lijst.
Toren met in de frontgevel de entree in een spitsboogvormige omlijsting. Rechthoekige dubbele houten deur met smeedijzer beslag met bovenlicht met traceringen in spitsboogvorm. Aan bovenzijde deur een rond stalen venster met gebrandschilderd glas. Spitsboogvormige galmgaten. Mechanisch torenuurwerk, B. Eijsbouts, 1933, later voorzien van elektrische opwinding.
Aan de linkerzijde van de toren, in de oksel met het schip een zijkapel met gewelfd tentdak. In de rechterzijgevel van de toren de smalle traptoren. Zijgevels van het schip met steunberen. In het middendeel van de rechterzijgevel van het schip werd in 1944 een Mariakapel aangebouwd geheel in de stijl van de kerk en in hetzelfde bouwmateriaal.
In de zijgevels van de absis vijf in hoogte afnemende spitsboogvormige glas-in-lood vensters. In de achtergevel van de absis een rond gebrandschilderd raam.
Van het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang: authentieke kerkbanken en biechtstoelen; absis met dubbele spitsboog en kruisribgewelven; een gebrandschilderd raam in de achtergevel van de absis vervaardigd door de Firma Essers te Kerkrade; een viertal houten beelden van Jean Weerts uit Maastricht; hoofdaltaar met geprofileerd altaarblad van zwart geaderd marmer rustend op vier zuiltjes van rood en wit marmer met kapiteel en basement; op het hoofdaltaar een rechthoekig tabernakel in gepatineerd brons van de firma Kersten-Leroy te Maastricht.
WaarderingDe R.K. Kerk ter ere van de H. Theresia is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en een typologische ontwikkeling. De kerk bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege haar bijzonder belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, voor het oeuvre van architect F.P.J. Peutz uit Heerlen, wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. A CATHOLIC CHURCH built in Traditionalism in 1932 to a design of architect F.P.J. Peutz from Heerlen in honour of H. Theresia. The church is markedly situated in an uneven terrain in the village centre of Ransdaal. The church was built by the parishioners of Ransdaal.
Description
The parish church has a polygonal floor plan and is placed in the transverse direction with respect to the street side. The roofs are covered with gabled roofs, half-hipped roofs and barrel vaults with Tuiles du Nord. The church building is characterised by its elongation which is emphasised by the absence of complete transept arms and by the use of gabled roofs with ridge lines in the transverse direction with respect to the street side. The church has a narrow elongated nave with side aisles extending behind the apse under half-hipped roof. The gabled roofs of nave and apse lie recessed between end gables with shoulder pieces. Apse under two height-staggered gabled roofs.
The building material used is Crauberger stone, hardstone and marl. Moulded plinth with cornice.
Tower with in the front gable the entrance in an ogival-shaped frame. Rectangular double wooden door with wrought iron fittings with fanlight with tracery in ogival form. At the top of the door a round steel window with stained glass. Ogival-shaped sound holes. Mechanical tower clock, B. Eijsbouts, 1933, later fitted with electrical winding.
On the left side of the tower, in the crotch with the nave a side chapel with barrel vault. In the right side gable of the tower the narrow stair tower. Side gables of the nave with buttresses. In the middle section of the right side gable of the nave a Marian chapel was added in 1944 entirely in the style of the church and in the same building material.
In the side gables of the apse five height-diminishing ogival-shaped leaded-glass windows. In the rear gable of the apse a round stained-glass window.
From the INTERIOR the following are of particular importance: authentic church benches and confessionals; apse with double ogival arch and cross-ribbed vaults; a stained-glass window in the rear gable of the apse made by the Firm Essers in Kerkrade; a set of four wooden statues by Jean Weerts from Maastricht; high altar with moulded altar top of black-veined marble resting on four columns of red and white marble with capital and base; on the high altar a rectangular tabernacle in patinated bronze by the firm Kersten-Leroy in Maastricht.
