Inleiding

Introduction

The richly ornamented DWELLING HOUSE was built in the first decade of the twentieth century under Transitional Architecture. On stylistic grounds the dwelling can be attributed to the anonymous architect of Stationsweg 18, 20 in Dokkum. The layout of the dwelling house of the rentier dwelling type still owes much to Neo-Classicism, but the interior is strongly influenced in its detailing by the Chalet style and Art Nouveau. The characterful dwelling house, at the corner of Stationsweg and Stationsstraat, lies within the Area of Special Value that was inventoried as part of the Monument Inventory Project. The dwelling house has a spacious front and side garden. The construction of the dwelling house falls within the period when the Noord Friesche Locale Spoorwegmaatschappij had its terminus station at Dokkum, close to the said dwelling house. Outside the protection of national heritage are the attached garage and added bicycle shed (1965) due to insufficient monument value and too recent date.

Description

The dwelling house has roughly a square ground plan and consists of one storey beneath an overhanging, truncated hipped roof. The roof slopes are interrupted by raised gable ends above the bay windows and on one corner and three small roof dormers under constricted pointed spires. The roof slopes are covered with slate (inverted Angers pattern) in overlapping tile fashion. The facades are constructed of brown bricks on a natural stone plinth and enlivened with cream-white facing bricks and red pressed bricks with tectonic decorations, red-jointed, such as bands along under, intermediate and upper eaves and straight arches. The facades are finished with a red pressed brick band, red-jointed, with a profiled, plastered band; upon this are mounted the worked brackets of the gutter line. The window openings are H-windows with green-tinted frosted glass, multi-pane fanlights. The windows, with the exception of those in the bay windows and of the attic storey, are beneath a curved straight arch with keystones with diamond-pointed heads, corner stones and artificial stone drum panels, in which simple Art Nouveau line decorations in low relief. All windows have a cut lead sill and green-glazed brick drip moulding. The south facade has in the centre an internal porch, entirely tiled, with a two-step sandstone threshold. The wainscoting has a border of tiles depicting a perch-like fish. The Neo-Renaissance folding door has wrought-iron grilles with whip-lash motif for the glass panels. The drum panel above the lintels of the porch has been altered. To the left of the porch a three-light window. To the right of the porch a three-sided bay window beneath a curved roof covered with zinc slates. The H-windows are squared off. The gutter brackets rest on a wooden facade cornice. Above the bay window an abrupt gable point with an ornamental truss. The window opening with segment-shaped side lights is framed by an almost circular decorative surround. In the roof slope above the entrance a wooden small roof dormer beneath a constricted, steep pointed spire with a leaf-shaped finial. The cut corner to the left side facade is distinguished by the slightly projecting facade over two storeys and is terminated by a half-hipped roof with an elegant wind vane upon which a zinc leaf cresting. The H-window on the upper floor has a herringbone arch fanlight. On the facade hangs a wooden flower box. The left side facade is largely blank except for a projecting three-sided bay window beneath a raised gable end with a half-hipped roof and crowned with a zinc leaf cresting. The H-windows are squared off and have multi-pane fanlights with green-tinted frosted glass. The gutter brackets rest on a wooden facade cornice. On the bay window a balcony with low iron railing. The double balcony doors with lower side lights are closed at the top by a straight arch. The rear facade on the north side is soberly executed; the tectonic decorations are consistently carried through, but the flat gable wall is not interrupted by projecting structures. The door and window openings have a drum panel with ornamental brickwork in yellow, red and darkened bricks. In the roof slope several more recent roof lights and a wooden roof dormer; at the corners of the hipped roof simple small crests. In the facade are located from right to left: an H-window, in the centre a back door with wrought-iron gate with whip-lash motif for the glass panels, a toilet window and a cellar window and to the right a closed panelled door with side and top lights. The right side facade of the dwelling house is partially intersected by an attached, contemporary scullery beneath a flat roof with several I-windows. The right side facade has a three-light window, detailed in the same manner as in the front facade, beneath which a cellar window. On the right roof slope stand two wooden roof dormers beneath a constricted pointed spire.

The interior of the dwelling house is structurally sound and contains many original and valuable interior components. Of particular importance are among others the hallway with marble floor tiles and wainscoting with Art Deco tiles and the stucco ceiling in the hall. In the side room a stucco ceiling with floral decorations and framed window seats. In the rooms in suite the stucco ceilings with oak leaf and blossom are present.
