Inleiding
Het GEMAAL van het polderwaterschap Oost- en Westdongeradeel werd in 1931 onder Interbellum-architectuur gebouwd en genaamd 'DONGERDIELEN', zoals op de voorgevel staat vermeld. De ontwerper is onbekend, maar het ontwerp valt toe te schrijven aan de polderopzichter W.D. Booijenga uit Metslawier. Het gemaal staat op een verhoogd terrein ter plaatse van het voormalige contributiehuis van het zeewerende waterschap Contributie Zeedijken Oostdongeradeel. Het terrein is van de openbare weg gescheiden door een erfscheiding met ijzeren buizen op en tussen gemetselde stijlen, die zijn afgedekt met een granieten zerksteen. Het gemaal heeft een ondergrondse uitstortkoker, die uitmondt in de schutkolk. In de archiefkelder van het gemaal bevinden zich vijf oude gedenkstenen. De opschriften zijn gewijd aan de uitgevoerde herstellingen aan de sluis in de jaren 1827, 1854, 1879 en 1910. De vijfde steen memoreert een eerste steenlegging in 1871 zonder dat is aangegeven waar de plechtigheid betrekking op had, maar het betreft wellicht het oude bedieningsgebouw op de dijk. De bemalingsintallatie is in 1979-'80 volautomatisch geworden en de oorspronkelijke electromotoren zijn vervangen.
Het gemaal is gerenoveerd waarbij een betonnen vloer in de openingen van de stroombogen is gelegd, een electrische krooshekreiniger is aangelegd en de ramen aan de sluiskom-zijde zijn vervangen (aluminium, 1994).
Omschrijving
Het gemaal heeft globaal een rechthoekig grondplan van drie traveeën met aan elke korte zijde een verjongde travee, die correspondeert met de functionele indeling: het grote middendeel, de eigenlijke machinekamer, heeft aan de ene zijde een entree met kantoorruimte en een archiefruimte eronder en aan de andere zijde een behuizing voor de transformator en een kleine werkplaats. De onderbouw van het gemaal, van stroombogen tot en met de plint, is opgetrokken in roodbruine vuurmondstenen, de gevelwanden zijn gemetseld met geelbruine bakstenen; de lintvoegen zijn terugliggend en de stootvoegen platvol. De hoeken en de muurdammen risaleren ten opzichte van de eigenlijke gevelwand, die als een gevellijst lijkt terug te springen. De gevels hebben tektonische decoraties in graniet, zoals lekdorpels, dekzerken op de muurdammen en blokken. In de vier geveltoppen vlechtingen, de drie zadeldaken met grote overstekken zijn belegd met zwarte, matgeglazuurde verbeterde Hollandse pannen en hoekpannen; op de machinekamer twee hoekschoorstenen. De ingangstravee is aan de zuidzijde en heeft een granieten stoep tussen gemetselde voetstukken afgedekt met granietblokken. De plint van vuurmondstenen is tot borstwering onder de vensters opgetrokken. Het geheel staat onder een uitkragende granieten latei met een waterhol. Boven de eenvoudige paneeldeur een gebeeldhouwde gedenksteen met het gekroonde alliantiewapen van de gemeenten Oost- en Westdongeradeel en het opschrift DONGER - DIELEN in contemporaine, ijzeren letters. Erboven in het midden een vlaggenmast op granieten voet. In de geveltop twee tweelichtvensters. In de west- en oostgevel van de entreetravee drie smalle tweelichtvensters. De oostzijde, de naar de dijk gewende gevel van de machinekamer, is horizontaal geleed door drie groepen van drie smalle, verticale meerruits vensters met ijzeren roedeverdeling. Aan de westzijde, de sluiskomzijde, bevindt zich de inlaat met drie stroombogen. De gevel van de machinekamer is horizontaal geleed door drie groepen van drie smalle, verticale tweelichtvensters met aluminium roedeverdeling. In de noordelijke travee zitten aan de oostzijde drie ijzeren tweelichtvensters. De noordzijde draagt een tamelijk gesloten karakter door de ijzeren deuren van de transformatorcellen en, daarnaast, de dubbele houten deur naar de werkplaats. Alle deuropeningen staan onder een uitkragende latei met waterhol. In de geveltop twee tweelichtvensters aan weerszijden van een uitgemetselde penant.
Het INTERIEUR van het gemaal is tamelijk oorspronkelijk gebleven, behoudens enkele roerende onderdelen. De binnenmuren zijn afgewerkt in schoon metselwerk met een lambrisering in geel geglazuurde bakstenen met een groen geglazuurde bakstenen rand. Alle deuren zijn de oorspronkelijke paneeldeuren en hebben een eenvoudige segmentvormige decoratie aan boven- en onderzijde van het paneel. In het kantoor een hoekschoorsteen. Onder het kantoor een archiefkelder waar vijf oude gedenkstenen zijn ingemetseld, waarvan tenminste vier afkomstig zijn van de oude sluis. In de machinekamer staan drie horizontale schroefpompen van de firma Gebroeder Stork & Co. uit Hengelo opgesteld. Bij de pompen hoort een koperen smeerset.
Waardering
Het gemaal De Dongerdielen uit 1931 nabij de Ezumazijl is van algemene cultuurhistorische waarde:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van de landschappelijke en bestuurlijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de geschiedenis van de polderwaterschappen in Oost- en Westdongeradeel en de Contribute Zeedijken Oostdongeradeel,
- vanwege de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en functionele inrichting van het gebouw,
- vanwege de bijzondere betekenis van het object als onderdeel van het historische complex Ezumazijl, waarmee het in technisch-functionele zin is verbonden doordat de uitstortkoker in de schutkolk uitmondt,

Introduction
The PUMPING STATION of the polder water board Oost- en Westdongeradeel was built in 1931 under Interbellum architecture and named 'DONGERDIELEN', as stated on the front facade. The designer is unknown, but the design can be attributed to the polder inspector W.D. Booijenga from Metslawier. The pumping station stands on raised ground at the location of the former contribution house of the sea-defending water board Contributie Zeedijken Oostdongeradeel. The site is separated from the public road by a boundary fence with iron tubes on and between masonry posts, which are topped with a granite coping stone. The pumping station has an underground discharge pipe, which opens into the lock chamber. In the archive cellar of the pumping station there are five old memorial stones. The inscriptions are dedicated to the repairs carried out on the lock in the years 1827, 1854, 1879 and 1910. The fifth stone commemorates a foundation stone laying in 1871 without indicating what the ceremony concerned, but it likely relates to the old control building on the dike. The pumping station has roughly a rectangular ground plan of three bays with on each short side a narrowed bay, which corresponds to the functional layout: the large middle section, the actual machine room, has on one side an entrance with office space and an archive room below it and on the other side a housing for the transformer and a small workshop. The substructure of the pumping station, from the current arches to and including the plinth, is constructed in reddish-brown fire clay bricks, the gable walls are laid with yellowish-brown bricks; the horizontal mortar joints are recessed and the vertical joints are filled flush. The corners and wall buttresses project in relation to the actual gable wall, which appears to recede like a cornice facade. The gables have tectonic decorations in granite, such as drip moulds, coping stones on the wall buttresses and blocks. In the four gable tops, weaving patterns; the three gabled roofs with large overhangs are covered with black, matt-glazed improved Dutch tiles and hip tiles; on the machine room two hip-end chimneys. The entrance bay is on the south side and has a granite step between masonry pedestals topped with granite blocks. The plinth of fire clay bricks is built up to breast height under the windows. The whole stands under a projecting granite lintel with a water groove. Above the simple panelled door a carved memorial stone with the crowned alliance coat of arms of the municipalities Oost- en Westdongeradeel and the inscription DONGER - DIELEN in contemporary iron letters. Above it in the middle a flagpole on a granite base. In the gable top two two-light windows. In the west and east gable of the entrance bay three narrow two-light windows. The INTERIOR of the pumping station has remained quite original, except for a few moveable components. The interior walls are finished in exposed brickwork with wainscoting in yellow-glazed bricks with a green-glazed brick border. All doors are the original panelled doors and have a simple segmental decoration at the top and bottom of the panel. In the office a hip-end chimney. Below the office an archive cellar where five old memorial stones are built in, at least four of which come from the old lock. In the machine room three horizontal screw pumps from the firm Gebroeder Stork & Co. from Hengelo are installed. With the pumps belongs a brass lubrication kit.
Valuation
The pumping station De Dongerdielen from 1931 near the Ezumazijl is of general cultural-historical value:
- as a particular expression of the landscape and administrative development, in particular the history of the polder water boards in Oost- en Westdongeradeel and the Contributie Zeedijken Oostdongeradeel,
