Inleiding

Introduction

The LOCK was, according to the memorial stone 'FOR POSTERITY' in the lock wall, renewed in 1931 under the direction of the polder supervisor of the Waterschap Oost- en Westdongeradeel W.D. Booijenga at Metslawier. The detailing is influenced by Interbellum architecture. The new navigation lock not only replaced the old Ezumazijl, an outfall lock that was built in 1671, but was also rotated somewhat and 13 metres longer - particularly in a westerly direction - and 45 centimetres deeper than the previous lock. The lock consists of a low section on the dike inland side and a high section on the dike slope. The high section is accessible on both sides of the lock chamber via steps set into the dike slope. Over the low section of the lock chamber lies a drawbridge. A control building stands on the dike. The renewal of the lock coincided with the construction of the pump station 'De Dongerdielen' whose discharge chute was projected into the southern lock wall. Four memorial stones, from 1827, 1854, 1879 and 1910, which became redundant at that time and commemorate the maintenance history of the lock, were then relocated to the archive cellar of the pump station. Since the closure of the Lauwerszee in 1979, the lock has been in the second line of sea defence. The lock gates were renewed in 1992.

Description

The lock walls are laid in yellow brickwork with granite coping stones and covering stones at the pivot points of the lock gates. Granite pull-basins are laid into the chamber walls. The lock has three sets of wooden pointed gates: inland ebb gates directed inland, also inland low flood gates directed seaward and offshore high flood gates directed seaward. Furthermore, on the land side, in front of the ebb gates and in front of the low flood gates, shutter beam slots have been provided in the lock walls. Walking boards for the operation of the chains are fitted on the lock gates. The operating mechanism of the lock gates consists of gearboxes with a horizontal, straight rack bar. On the lock walls stands a balustrade consisting of laid-up piers with granite capping between which and over which are pipes. Lamps are positioned at three places along the lock chamber in the same design.

Valuation

The lock from 1931 is of general cultural historical value:

- as a distinctive expression of a landscape development, in particular because of the hydraulic engineering history of Dongeradeel,

- because of the historical continuity of a lock at this location, connected with the development of the hamlet around the lock,

- owing to architectural integrity,

- as the principal structure of the complete complex which exhibits a high degree of architectural unity and functional coherence,

- because of the special importance of the structure in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the buildings and of the waterways.
