Late-18th-century GARDEN HOUSE, built in the garden of the premises Voorstreek 3. Distinctive is that the facade of the building is not oriented towards the house, but is oriented towards the garden. Description

Built of brown-red brick in Flemish bond, transversely positioned single-storey garden house on basement, six bays wide and covered by a blue-glazed tile-laid truncated gabled roof; fine pointing; carefully detailed neoclassical Louis XVI cornice. In the garden facade three of the originally four tall-arched rear Empire windows with needles with carved laurel motifs and one-and-a-half brick crow's-foot finials are preserved. A lower-situated door provides access to the barn-high basement, which is divided into two rooms and receives its light via two horizontal windows. In the INTERIOR various valuable elements are preserved. These include remnants of white tiling that point to (partial) use of the basement as a kitchen; the arrangement in the beam ceiling that still indicates the location of the stove; a wide staircase of hardstone that leads to the corridor on the ground floor paved with marble tiles and asymmetrically positioned. Halfway up this staircase lies the access to the quarter-turn attic stairs with flattened balusters. On either side of the corridor lie respectively a sober room (northeast side) with wainscoting, blinds and continuous windowsill and a more representative room (northwest side). In particular the appointments of the northwestern room are of great importance. This has wainscoting with panels, four-panel window blinds and a continuous windowsill; furthermore a stucco ceiling with floral decorations and a symmetrical cabinet wall in Empire style with a panelled and embellished porte-brisee with decorative needle with laurel-leaf motif and set in moulded architrave with acanthus leaf as 'keystone'; spandrels with woodcarving of oak leaf. This cabinet, behind which the staircase to the attic is concealed, is flanked by lower and right-angled portes-brisees; along the top runs a corniced and multiply moulded cornice with dentil moulding. Against the northern side wall is a substantial fireplace with mantel of dark marble with white-marble rosettes; at the breast with refined moulding and spandrels filled with oak leaf the filling is missing (a mirror or a painting).
