Inleiding
Voormalig PENSIONAAT voor dames, thans bekend als het Elisabeth Gruytershuis, 1936. Gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van het St.Servaasklooster, aan de noordzijde van het kloostercomplex van de Zusters Onder de Bogen. Ontworpen door architect A.J.N. Boosten, in opdracht van de Zusters Onder de Bogen, in een door het Nieuwe Bouwen beïnvloede stijl, waarin elementen van het Nieuwe Bouwen verenigd zijn met de toepassing van traditionele, streekgebonden bouwmaterialen.
Omschrijving
Het pensionaat heeft een U-vormige plattegrond, waarvan de open zijdenaar het noorden is gericht. Vier bouwlagen plus zolder en souterrainverdieping. De gevel aan de straatzijde is voorzien van een basalten plint en een zandstenen optrek. De hoofdentree is links van de middenas geplaatst en wordt aan de rechterzijde geflankeerd door een zestal vensterkozijnen, aan de linkerzijde door twee vensterkozijnen plus een dubbele, rechthoekige houten deur. Onder elk vensterkozijn bevindt zich een souterrainvenster. De deurlijst van de hoofdentree is uitgevoerd in licht getinte natuursteen. De optrek heeft vier dubbele vensterassen. De vensterlijsten zijn uitgevoerd in basalt. De achtergevel aan de kloosterhofzijde telt eveneens vier dubbele vensterassen, maar is evenals de gevels rond de opengebleven binnenplaats geheel in baksteen uitgevoerd. De oorspronkelijke stalen kruiskozijnen zijn vervangen door aluminium vensters met een identieke geleding. Koperen dorpels.
Het geheel wordt gedekt door schilddaken met leien. Overstekken, koperen goten. De dakvlakken aan de straat- en kloosterhofzijde zijn voorzien van een zevental dakkapellen.
Waardering
Het voormalige damespensionaat is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale, geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de bouwstijl, de betrokkenheid van architect A.J.N. Boosten, de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik.
Het damespensionaat behoort tot het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht, is vanwege de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de binnenstad en is van belang voor het aanzien van Maastricht. Verder beschikt het pensionaat over een gaaf exterieur en is van importantie voor de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Former BOARDING HOUSE for ladies, now known as the Elisabeth Gruytershuis, 1936. Located in the closed wall of the St. Servatius Cloister, on the north side of the cloister complex of the Sisters Under the Arches. Designed by architect A.J.N. Description
The boarding house has a U-shaped ground plan, the open side of which is oriented towards the north. Four storeys plus loft and basement level. The facade on the street side is provided with a basalt plinth and a sandstone facing. The main entrance is placed to the left of the central axis and is flanked on the right side by six window frames, on the left side by two window frames plus a double, rectangular wooden door.
