Inleiding
Gebouw A, oftewel het WACHTGEBOUW van de Tapijnkazerne, dominant gesitueerd op de hoek van Prins Bisschopsingel en de St.Hubertuslaan, 1917. Gebouwd in opdracht van het Ministerie van Oorlog in een traditionele bouwtrant, naar ontwerp van de Kapitein Eerstaanwezend Ingenieur der Genie van het Eerste Genie Commandement te Breda.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand wachtgebouw van twee bouwlagen plus zolderverdieping op vrijwel rechthoekige plattegrond. Kleine uitbouw in dwarsrichting onder insteekkap aan de achtergevel. Op de zuidoosthoek een vierkante, ingesnoerde traptoren met drie uurwerken, een spits met smeedijzeren windvaan in de vorm van een Nederlands wapenschild. Het trappenhuis van de toren heeft rechthoekige houten zesruitsvensters.
De oostgevel van het hoofdvolume (onder wolfdak met kruispannen) heeft aan de oostzijde een symmetrische indeling van negen vensterassen (rechthoekige houten schuifkozijnen met vierruits roedeverdeling in het schuifgedeelte en negenruits bovenlichten) over twee bouwlagen. Hierin een middenrisaliet met entree (rondboogvormige dubbele houten toegangsdeur met twaalfruits bovenlicht), drie vensterassen over twee bouwlagen plus zolderverdieping en een hijsbalk. Dit risaliet bevindt zich onder een ingestoken wolfskap.
De zuidgevel heeft een symmetrische indeling met vier vensterassen plus een poortingang. Tegen de westgevel is een hoogoplopende schoorsteen geplaatst. De acht vensters van het cellenblok in de westgevel zijn van traliewerk voorzien. In de noordgevel is een zij-uitgang gesitueerd en een luidklok met het opschrift: "G.R.W. Kimmell Scholtens van Daalen & Ooster Heffelen anno 1771".
Het geheel is opgetrokken in baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband. Verder is er een geprofileerde plint met zandstenen lijst, waarin de dorpels van de eerste bouwlaag geïntegreerd zijn, een zandstenen Florentijnse boog rond de hoofdentree, zandstenen hoekstenen in de schuine plint en het ingesnoerde gedeelte van de toren. De bakgoot van de toren rust op een decoratieve lijst. Vensterstrek. Kroonlijst met eenvoudige bloktanddecoratie.
Het INTERIEUR van het wachtgebouw is vrijwel onveranderd bewaard gebleven.
Waardering
Het wachtgebouw van de Tapijnkazerne is van cultuurhistorisch belang is een bijzondere uitdrukking van een bestuurlijke en typlogische ontwikkeling.
Uit architectuurhistorisch oogpunt is het wachtgebouw van bijzonder belang voor het oeuvre van het Wapen der Genie, van belang vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp en van belang wegens het materiaalgebruik en de eenvoudige ornamentiek.

Description
Freestanding guard house of two storeys plus attic storey on an approximately rectangular floor plan. Small extension in transverse direction under set-back dormer at the rear facade. On the south-east corner a square, tapered stair tower with three clock faces, a spire with wrought-iron weathervane in the form of a Dutch coat of arms. The stairwell of the tower has rectangular wooden six-pane windows.
The east facade of the main volume (under half-hipped roof with Spanish tiles) has on the east side a symmetrical arrangement of nine window bays (rectangular wooden sash windows with four-pane glazing bars in the sliding section and nine-pane fanlights) over two storeys. In this a central projection with entrance (round-arched double wooden access door with twelve-pane fanlight), three window bays over two storeys plus attic storey and a hoist beam. This projection is situated beneath an inset half-hipped dormer.
The south facade has a symmetrical arrangement with four window bays plus a gate entrance. Against the west facade a tall chimney is placed. The eight windows of the cell block in the west facade are provided with ironwork. In the north facade a side exit is situated and a bell with the inscription: "G.R.W. Kimmell Scholtens van Daalen & Ooster Heffelen anno 1771".
The whole is constructed in brick, laid in cross bond. Further there is a profiled plinth with sandstone list, in which the thresholds of the first storey are integrated, a sandstone Florentine arch around the main entrance, sandstone corner stones in the sloping plinth and the tapered section of the tower. The roof gutter of the tower rests on a decorative list. Window stretching. Cornice with simple block-tooth decoration.
The INTERIOR of the guard house has remained virtually unchanged.
