Inleiding

Drievoudige VILLA genaamd Villa Hubertus, 1904.

Introduction

Triple VILLA named Villa Hubertus, 1904. Situated at the corner of St. Hubertuslaan and Prins Bisschopsingel. Built in a style influenced by eclecticism, commissioned by L. Polis & Cons., after a design by architect Willem Sprenger (1875-1944). Sprenger built several villas for the Villapark, an important expansion district of Maastricht designed by city engineer A. Brender à Brandis. Villa Hubertus marks the western entrance to this Villapark. The triple villa, set back from the building line, with a striking side facade, forms a transition from the closed urban block on St. Hubertuslaan, which closes off the Villapark on this side, and the greener section in the heart of the district. Sprenger himself was a resident of the building St. Hubertuslaan 25 until his death. The use of many building fragments and tiles from elsewhere is explained by the fact that Sprenger held an important role in Limburg as a restoration architect, and he - unlike many of his contemporaries - had an eye for the preservation of old building materials. The right-hand building was inhabited by the Limburgian musician Henri Hermans (1883-1947), after whom the nearby park is also named. In the year of completion 1904, on the instructions of W. Sprenger, two secondary kitchens were added to the buildings St. Hubertuslaan 25 and Prins Bisschopsingel 26, and a lavatory was added at St. Hubertuslaan 23. All later extensions are excluded from protection, as is the recent garden wall between no. 23 and 25, as well as the garage and the living room extension at building no. 23.

Description

Villa Hubertus has two storeys, an attic storey and a basement on a floor plan with a rectangular main form, situated lengthwise in relation to St. Hubertuslaan. Transverse to the rear facades are a number of outbuildings of three, two or one storey, which creates a staggered floor plan and a bevelled profile on the rear side of Villa Hubertus. The whole is covered by a composite roof structure of mansard and gabled roofs, including a roof light (wire glass) for lighting of the stairwell, and flat roofs. The roof panels, on the front with four roof dormers, are covered with bitumen to replace the slate, the remaining roof surfaces with curved pantiles. The chamfered roof dormers have fluting ornaments in the corner braces. Irregularly arranged front facade with highly varied material use and striking ornamentation. Slightly projecting central section with a gabled roof and a recessed hip, which houses building St. Hubertuslaan 25. Rectangular wooden bay windows against the front facade of St. Hubertuslaan 23 and the side facade of Prins Bisschopsingel 26.

The dwelling St. Hubertuslaan no. 25 with the central projection has an irregular facade arrangement. Natural stone plinth. Red-brown brick with headers and stretchers, in which three marl facade stones: the inscription "anno 1904"; a representation of compasses, set square and ruler as a symbol of the architectural profession of resident W. Sprenger; facade inscription next to entrance door: W. Sprenger, architect. 18th century hard stone facade stone with horizontal anchor and text "In den Ancker". Yellow and red bands. Hard stone letterbox and window sills. Anchors. Segmental arch shaped T-windows with 8-pane fanlights. Unglazed segmental arch windows next to segmental arch shaped balcony door with 8-pane fanlight. The balcony has a wrought iron balustrade on a console in the form of a herma. Segmental arch shaped 12-pane gable windows. Segmental arch shaped wooden door with vertically divided fanlight. Chalet-like overhang with carved wind brace and gable ornament. In the rear facade a bay with segmental arch shaped double wooden cross windows with small glazing bars; adjoining on the right the extension for kitchen and lavatory with segmental arch shaped wooden windows and doors.

The front facade of St. Hubertuslaan 23 has three bays and is dominated by a considerable bay window with balcony and renewed balustrade. The bay window has rectangular wooden windows and doors with four-pane fanlights, overhang on wooden consoles. Rustication band with moulded cornice. Red brick with headers and stretchers, ornamented yellow bond courses, red-yellow bands. Anchors. Marl decorative squares and similar consoles for the gutter. Hard stone sills. Segmental arch shaped T-windows and balcony door with 8-pane fanlights. Panel door with vertically divided fanlight with leaded glass. Blind greyish-brown side facade. On the rear side extensions of three and two storeys under flat roofs.

The facades of the building Prins Bisschopsingel 26 have a dark-tinted brick structure. Facade on St. Hubertuslaan with two window axes, in which on the right a small triangular bay window with zinc tent roof. Ornamental wall anchors with building year indication 1904. Two pilasters, extending into a cornice with multiple block-tooth decorations. Asymmetrical south (entrance) facade with inscription "Villa St. Hubertus", stepped or obliquely sloping building line, large bay window with balcony and wrought iron balustrade and entrance arrangement. Red and yellow decorative brickwork.

The plots are largely surrounded by wrought iron railings on a brick basement that varies in height.

The interiors - with the exception of the layout of St. Hubertuslaan 23 - are virtually unchanged in arrangement and contain various elements of importance including glazed brick fireplace surrounds, ornamented corridor tiles, panel and sliding doors, stucco ornaments, etc.

Evaluation

The triple villa is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of a typological development and as a dwelling of the musician Henri Hermans and the architect W. Sprenger. The architectural-historical values are determined by the architectural style, the involvement of architect W. Sprenger, who gave the object a very personal character by incorporating collected building fragments, the aesthetic quality of his design, the material use and the distinctive ornamentation. The building has architectural integrity in exterior and interior and is of importance in relation to the structural and visual integrity of Maastricht. Furthermore, there are typological and architectural-historical rarity values: the triple villa can be seen as a precursor to the later common three-family-under-one-roof dwellings. The ensemble values of the building are considerable: it marks the western entrance to Maastricht's Villapark, which is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning importance at national level; it is connected with the development and expansion of the city due to its location; the villa is of particular significance for the appearance of the city and has a historical-spatial relationship with the villapark.
