Inleiding
Dubbel HERENHUIS in eclectische stijl, 1898, in de gesloten wand van het Keizer Karelplein. Het pand werd gebouwd in opdracht van L. Sougniez, naar een ontwerp van architect Joseph Hollman, op de locatie van een achttiende eeuwse voorganger, waarvan een deel van de gewelfkelders en de opgaande vakwerkmuren in het nieuwe achterhuis werden geïntegreerd.
Omschrijving
Dubbel herenhuis, bestaand uit een boven- en een onderhuis, met souterrain, drie bouwlagen en zolderverdieping. Het geheel is gebouwd op een U-vormige plattegrond.
Het hoofdvolume wordt gedekt door gecombineerd mansarde- en zadeldak.
Het dakschild is gedekt met leien in schubdekking, de overige dakvlakken met kruispannen. Twee zinken osseogen met houten sieromlijsting.
Bakgoten op consoles.
Het herenhuis heeft een symmetrische lijstgevel met drie vensterassen.
In de eerste laag een hardstenen plint met souterrainvenster inclusief rooster, doorlopend in de hardstenen dorpellijst en traceringen van de drie centraal geplaatste vensters: een rechthoekig houten T-venster, geflankeerd door twee rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlicht. De eerste bouwlaag is voor het overige voorzien van stucwerk in imitatie-rustica. In de flankerende assen bevinden zich twee identieke paneeldeuren met bovenlicht en smeedwerk roosters.
Vanaf de tweede laag is de gevel opgetrokken in gele baksteen, gemetseld in kops verband en voorzien van geprofileerde vensteromlijstingen, kuiven in diamantkopvorm en speklagen. In de tweede laag een in de middenas geplaatst balkon met balusterzuilen, door doorlopend in de onderdorpels van de flankerende rechthoekige houten T-vensters. Een rechthoekige, dubbele houten balkondeur waarvan de lijst is voorzien van een architraaf.
In de derde laag een drietal rechthoekige houten T-vensters. De lijst van het middenvenster wordt bekroond door een fronton en heeft een borstwering met een reeks balusterzuilen. Kroonlijst met bakgootconsoles, waartussen casettes en boven het fronton het opschrift "ANNO 1898". Ter bekroning van de middenas een lucarne met fronton en smeedijzeren nokversiering.
De achtergevels aan de binnenplaats zijn geheel wit gesausd en voorzien van segmentboogvormige houten T-vensters.
Deze binnenplaats wordt afgesloten door een bakstenen muur. De indeling van het pand is grotendeels intact.
Waardering
Het dubbele herenhuis is van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bouwstijl, de esthetische kwaliteit, het materiaalgebruik, de ornamentiek en de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur.
Het pand is een belangrijk onderdeel van het beschermde stadsgezicht Maastricht, is door de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de stad en is van belang voor het aanzien van de stad. Description
Double townhouse, consisting of an upper and a lower house, with basement, three storeys and attic storey. The whole is built on a U-shaped plan.
The main volume is covered by a combined mansard and gabled roof.
The roof ridge is covered with slates in overlapping shingles, the other roof planes with curved roof tiles. Two zinc bull's-eye windows with wooden ornamental framing.

The townhouse has a symmetrical cornice-topped facade with three window bays.
In the first storey a ashlar plinth with basement window including grille, continuing in the ashlar sill strip and traceries of the three centrally placed windows: a rectangular wooden cross window, flanked by two rectangular wooden windows with fanlight. The first storey is otherwise provided with stucco work in imitation rustica. In the flanking bays there are two identical panelled doors with fanlight and wrought-iron grilles.
From the second storey onwards, the facade is built in yellow brick, laid in header bond and provided with moulded window surrounds, curved copings in diamond-head form and courses of ashlar. In the second storey a balcony placed in the central bay with baluster columns, continuing in the sills of the flanking rectangular wooden cross windows. A rectangular, double wooden balcony door the surround of which is provided with an architrave.
In the third storey three rectangular wooden cross windows. The surround of the central window is crowned by a pediment and has a parapet with a series of baluster columns. Cornice with gutter consoles, between which cassettes and above the pediment the inscription "ANNO 1898". As a crowning of the central bay a dormer window with pediment and wrought-iron ridge ornament.
The rear facades to the courtyard are entirely whitewashed and provided with segment-arched wooden cross windows.
This courtyard is enclosed by a brick wall. The interior layout of the building is largely intact.
Valuation
The double townhouse is of architectural-historical value because of the building style, the aesthetic quality, the use of materials, the ornamentation and the special coherence between exterior and interior.
