Inleiding
Expressionistisch, in 1914 naar een ontwerp van Rijksbouwmeester Ir. D.E.C. Knuttel gebouwd POSTKANTOOR met DIRECTEURSWONING. Het pand is gesitueerd op de hoek van de Statenstraat en het Keizer Karelplein nabij het Vrijthof.
Omschrijving
Het postkantoor heeft een V-vormige plattegrond, telt twee bouwlagen, en een souterrain- en een zolderverdieping. Schilddaken met Oud-Hollands vernieuwde pannen. Dakkapellen.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen en hardsteen.
In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige houten deuren, in de tweede bouwlaag rechthoekige houten balkondeuren met glaspanelen met twintigruitsverdeling en bovenlichten met achtruitsverdeling. In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met zestienruits verdeling met bovenlichten met achtruitsverdeling. In de tweede bouwlaag vensters met twaalfruitsverdeling met bovenlichten met achtruitsverdeling.
Hoofdingang geflankeerd door twee rechthoekige smalle vensters.
Hoekgebouw met afgeronde hoek waarin entreeportaal is opgenomen. Dit gedeelte uitlopend in achtzijdige toren met koepelbekroning. Hardstenen plint. Bakstenen gevels geleed door een pilasterstelling die aan het Keizer Karelplein verdeeld is in acht, en aan de Statenstraat in zeven vensterassen. Horizontale geleding met zandstenen waterlijsten boven de lisenen en onder de goot. De goot is inpandig aangelegd. Het hoekportaal geleed door twee pilasters waarlangs in de tweede bouwlaag vierkante loggia's met zandstenen omlijsting en waartussen in de eerste bouwlaag het entreeportaal. Entree in een zandstenen omlijsting met twee gecanneleerde zuilen waarop een latei en met hierboven een rondboog. Aan weerszijden van de rondboog in zandsteen gebeeldhouwde adelaars. Aan de bovenzijde van de entreepartij een gevelsteen met rijkswapen. Entree met toegangstrap in hardsteen.
Aan de achtergevel enkele uitbouwen met platte daken.
INTERIEUR deels ingrijpend gewijzigd, overigens niet beschermenswaardig.
Waardering
Het postkantoor is cultuurhistorisch van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling.
Het pand bezit architectuurhistorische waarden wegens het bijzondere belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van Rijksbouwmeester Ir. D.E.C. Knuttel, wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de bijzondere ornamentiek. Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en daarmee van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. Het pand is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur, en in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving en wegens de architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Entrance in a sandstone surround with two fluted columns on which a lintel and above it a round arch. On either side of the round arch stone-carved eagles in sandstone. At the top of the entrance section a facade stone with royal coat of arms. Entrance with access staircase in stone.
On the rear facade several extensions with flat roofs.
INTERIOR partly substantially altered, otherwise not worthy of protection.
