The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Built in New Building style in 1937 according to a design by architect A.J.N. Boosten from Maastricht on behalf of the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception, HOSPITAL PAVILION called Sint Lydwinahuis. The hospital pavilion is situated on the park-like grounds of the monastery complex of the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception.

Description

The former hospital pavilion has a rectangular ground plan with an extension on the north side and a side wing on the west side at an angle of 30 degrees to the main building. The building has two storeys and is covered with gabled roofs with manganese-coloured, Old Dutch renewed tiles. Roof gutters. Large overhangs on consoles. The chapel tower is provided with a cross on the ridge. The building material used is brick in Flemish bond, concrete, steel and plasterwork. Steel window and door frames in a grey-green colour.

Characteristic glazing bar divisions.

The former hospital pavilion consists of a basement plus two storeys under gabled roofs. On the north side the facade is provided with seven window bays. The chapel is provided with a narrowed, tower-like termination under a raised gabled roof, is articulated with steel rounded-arch windows and has a round steel window in the raised gable with an image of the Holy Mary below it. This image comes from a hospital in Rotterdam that was struck by German bombardment in 1940. Over the entire length of the sun-facing south facade the building is provided on the ground floor with covered glazed light wells under a bent gabled roof. These light wells were used for lung patients. Above, on the storey, there are fifteen bays and over the entire length of the second storey balconies on concrete floors with steel balustrades. In the gable ends there are each three window bays.

The whole has a brick plinth in Flemish bond with course, in which various basement windows are housed. The structure has flat, white-plastered facades and steel window frames.

In the INTERIOR are among others of importance: chapel with wall paintings by Francois Mes O.S.B. and ambulatory with wrought-iron balustrade; stairwell with railing with wooden armrest and with tall leaded glass window with geometric patterns. Remaining interior is virtually completely intact apart from some post-war modernisations.

Valuation

The former hospital pavilion of the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception is of cultural-historical value as a remarkable expression of a social, spiritual and typological development.

The architectural-historical values are determined by the very exceptional significance of the pavilion for the history of architecture, by the involvement of architect Boosten and the high aesthetic quality of his design, by the exceptional use of materials and by the exceptional coherence between exterior and interior.

Furthermore, the pavilion is situated in the protected townscape Maastricht, it has a high degree of architectural integrity and is of importance due to its architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
