Waardering

Description
Introduction
CATHOLIC SCHOOL called Sint Aloysiusschool, built in Eclectic style in 1907 after a design by architect Joseph Hollman on commission of the G.A. Stans, Superior General of the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The school is situated behind the monastery of the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
The extensions to the rear facade, namely a gymnasium and a canopy are excluded from protection.
Description
The school has a rectangular plan placed in the longitudinal direction, has two storeys and is covered with gabled roofs with inset gables with renewed old Dutch tiles and pantiles.
Gutter boxes on consoles.
Dormer windows with chalet-like overhangs furnished with a three-lobed motif carved in wood and wrought-iron ornaments, wrought-iron bracing of the sandstone cross on the central gable of the school section.
The material used is brickwork, laid in Flemish bond.
Sandstone and artificial stone.
The whole consists of two school sections. The larger school section is situated on the south side and consists of a symmetrically designed building volume of two storeys in the longitudinal direction, provided with seventeen window bays. Rectangular wooden, both single and double wooden cross windows with vertical fanlight glazing. Rectangular wooden gable windows. Rectangular, ornamented wooden doors with vertically glazed fanlights, furnished with natural stone tracery. Centrally there is a broad central projection with three window axes, terminating in a spout gable covered with sandstone and crowned by a sandstone cross on a stepped elevation, bearing the inscription "anno 1907". This central projection is flanked on either side by gable fields of three window axes, followed by narrower projections of one window axis with spout gables. Next to these are gable fields with three window axes on both sides.
On the south side is the symmetrically designed smaller school section with two by two window axes in a central central projection with spout gable, entrance door and an image of St. Louis under a neo-Gothic baldachin, including a pinnacle decorated with cross flowers. The plinth is decorated with sculptured figures with a book in which the alphabet is depicted. In the right gable of this section is a stone tablet with the name of the architect.
The architecture of both school sections is characterized by a projecting brick plinth with a sandstone string course, a brick facing with sandstone sills and banding, vertical facade articulation by means of pilasters. The windows and doors are set in arched lists, furnished with infill pieces with three-lobed motif. The pilasters terminate in a stepped projecting cornice with mask decorations.
The shoulder pieces of the gable are furnished with mask decorations and gargoyles. Arched niches and arched friezes in the spout gables. The exposed side facade of the building has corner pilasters, continuous banding, a stepped projecting cornice with mask decorations, diamond-shaped decorative brickwork in a lighter colour and rising in height arched niches in the gable end.
INTERIOR substantially intact, otherwise not worthy of protection.
Valuation
The Sint Aloysiusschool is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development. The school possesses architectural-historical value due to the involvement of architect J. Hollman, the aesthetic qualities of the design, as a specimen of Eclecticism, for the history of architecture beyond the region, the particular use of materials and the ornamentation.
Ensemble value is derived by the school from its location within the protected townscape of Maastricht and the particular significance for the appearance of the city centre. The school is finally of general importance due to the high degree of architectural integrity, also in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment, and as a Catholic school of relatively great age possesses high functional rarity.
