Eclectisch HERENHUIS in de gesloten wand van de Wilhelminasingel, 1896.
De bouwvergunning werd aangevraagd door architect Jean H. Meyers, tegelijkertijd met de naburige panden 84 en 86.
Omschrijving
Eclectisch HERENHUIS met souterrainverdieping, drie bouwlagen plus zolderverdieping en uitbouw van twee bouwlagen onder plat dwars op de achtergevel, het geheel op een L-vormige plattegrond. In de oksel van achtergevel en uitbouw een serre van één laag. Het hoofdvolume wordt gedekt door een zadeldak met kruispannen, bakgoten op consoles en insteekkap.
Vrijwel symmetrische lijstgevel over drie lagen met drie respectievelijk twee vensterassen. De eerste bouwlaag is geheel gestuct en heeft een geprofileerde plint met diamantkoppen, een schoenschraper, smeedijzeren souterrainvensters, gestucte Florentijnse bogen. Rechthoekige houten paneeldeur met bovenlicht, twee rechthoekige houten T-vensters, hardstenen dorpels.
In de tweede laag een over de hele gevelbreedte doorlopend balkon met een siersmeedijzeren balustrade. Het balkon rust op een viertal consoles, voorzien van rijke stucwerkornamenten met mensenhoofdmotieven. Dit balkon is toegankelijk middels twee rechthoekige, dubbele houten balkondeuren met bovenlicht. De gevel is vanaf de tweede bouwlaag optrokken in witgesausde baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband en voorzien van betegelde venstervulstukken, gestucte composietkapitelen in de venster- en deurlijsten, geprofileerde strekken met gestucte aanzet- en sluitstenen, een dubbele muizetandlijst onder de dorpels van de derde laag uitlopend in stucconsoles met honde- en kattekopmotieven.
In de derde laag een tweetal rechthoekige houten T-vensters. Boven de vensters van de derde laag rondboogfriezen op gestucte dierenhoofdconsoles, een dubbele muizetandlijst onder bakgoot plus consoles.
De gevel wordt bekroond door een lucarne met stucfronton, waarin in een rondboogvormige lijst een dubbele houten balkondeur. Het balkon lijkt te rusten op een (smeedwerk)zuil een gedragen door jongensfiguur op een console. De balkononderzijde is voorzien van een drietal gestucte koppen, het balkon van een siersmeedijzeren balustrade.
In het INTERIEUR, waarvan de indeling slechts ten dele is bewaard gebleven, zijn onder meer de stucornamenten en marmeren haardlijsten van belang.
Waardering
Het herenhuis is van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bouwstijl, de betrokkenheid van architect Meyers, de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van diens ontwerp en de ornamentiek. Het pand is een zeer belangrijk onderdeel van de oostelijke stadsuitbreiding na het slechten van de vestingwerken, is vanwege deze situering ten zeerste verbonden met de ontwikkeling/uitbreiding van de stad en is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. Het herenhuis beschikt over een redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid en is zeer belangrijk in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Electic TOWNHOUSE with basement storey, three storeys plus attic storey and two-storey extension with flat roof perpendicular to the rear facade, all on an L-shaped plan. In the angle between rear facade and extension a one-storey conservatory. The main volume is covered by a gabled roof with cross tiles, rainwater gutters on consoles and inset hip.
Almost symmetrical cornice-topped facade over three storeys with three and two window axes respectively. The first storey is entirely stuccoed and has a moulded plinth with diamond heads, a boot-scraper, wrought-iron basement windows, stuccoed Florentine arches. Rectangular wooden panelled door with fanlight, two rectangular wooden T-windows, hardstone sills.
In the second storey a balcony running the entire width of the facade with ornamental wrought-iron balustrade. The balcony rests on four consoles, fitted with rich stucco ornaments with human head motifs. This balcony is accessible by means of two rectangular, double wooden balcony doors with fanlight. The facade from the second storey upwards is built in whitewashed brick, laid in English bond and provided with tiled window infill pieces, stuccoed composite capitals in the window and door frames, moulded stretches with stuccoed springer and keystone blocks, a double dentil moulding under the sills of the third storey running out into stucco consoles with dog and cat head motifs.
In the third storey two rectangular wooden T-windows. Above the windows of the third storey round arch friezes on stuccoed animal head consoles, a double dentil moulding under rainwater gutter plus consoles.
The facade is crowned by a dormer with stucco pediment, in which in a round arched frame a double wooden balcony door. The balcony appears to rest on a (wrought-iron) column borne by a boy figure on a console. The underside of the balcony is fitted with three stuccoed heads, the balcony with an ornamental wrought-iron balustrade.
In the INTERIOR, of which the layout has only been partially preserved, the stucco ornaments and marble fireplace mouldings are among the most important features.
