GEDENKTEKEN voor de tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog in Maastricht overleden Franse vluchtelingen. Gebeeldhouwd door Huib Luns, op 3 mei 1926 in het stadspark onthuld.
Omschrijving
Natuurstenen beeldhouwwerk, opgebouwd uit diverse los bewerkte blokken.
Gesitueerd bij de doorbraak van de oude stadsmuur in de St.Pieterstraat, in een plantsoen dat wordt omgeven door een smeedijzeren hekwerk. Het gedenkteken bestaat uit een engel, die bloemen legt op een met een rouwkleed bedekte doodkist. Deze kist rust op een grote sokkel, aan de voorzijde voorzien van het opschrift: "ILS S'ENDORMENT EN PARLANT DU RETOUR AU PAYS".
Waardering
Het gedenkteken is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele, historische en typologische ontwikkeling. De betrokkenheid van de beeldhouwer Huib Luns en de esthetische kwaliteiten van zijn werk geven het gedenkteken een grote architectuurhistorische waarde. Het beeld is prominent geplaatst op de overgang van historische binnenstad naar het 19e eeuwse stadspark en als zodanig van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien voor de stad. Natural stone sculpture, constructed from various separately worked blocks.
Situated at the breach of the old city wall in the St.Pieterstraat, in a planted area surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. The memorial consists of an angel laying flowers on a coffin draped with a pall. This coffin rests on a large plinth, provided on the front with the inscription: "ILS S'ENDORMENT EN PARLANT DU RETOUR AU PAYS".
Appreciation
The memorial is of cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural, historical and typological development. The involvement of sculptor Huib Luns and the aesthetic qualities of his work give the memorial considerable architectural-historical value.
