Inleiding

Description
Very expressive, asymmetrical architecture, in which horizontal and vertical elements alternate and support each other in a remarkable composition. The hostel, which now serves as an office, has an almost rectangular floor plan with basement storey, two storeys and attic in longitudinal direction. Profiled, red-toned brick plinth with sawtooth decorations on the gable corners and roll course; red brick superstructure laid in stretcher bond. In the front facade is the projecting entrance section with wooden canopy, two block-shaped volumes on either side of the rectangular, double wooden panel door with vertical glass panels. Above the door canopy a rectangular steel fanlight of considerable dimensions with nine-pane window glazing and stained glass. To the right of the entrance a red facade stone with the inscription 'Een vaste burcht is onze God', and a rectangular wooden cross window. The plinth continues in the brick playground wall. On the left a window series of five undivided, rectangular wooden windows in a wooden frame.
In the left side facade is likewise on the first storey a rectangular wooden frame, however with five windows.
Above this, at the height of the stage of the theatre hall, a round-arched wooden door with platform. In the gable a loft window with decorative grille. The side facade terminates in a short, blind wall.
The right side facade is on the first storey provided with a rectangular wooden cross window with horizontal glazing bars fanlight, plus a rectangular, double wooden cross window with horizontal glazing bars fanlight. On the second storey a window series with six rectangular wooden windows, of which the second and fifth are blind. In the gable a loft window with decorative grille.
The rear facade is dominated by a projecting entrance vestibule under a canopy. The entire front is formed by a rectangular wooden frame with a centrally placed double wooden door, flanked by rectangular wooden side windows and horizontally divided stained glass fanlights. On both sides a rectangular wooden window with horizontally divided stained glass fanlight.
On either side of this entrance are, somewhat recessed, L-shaped wooden benches on brick bases.
On the right side a rectangular wooden window frame and a door with a large horizontally divided stained glass fanlight.
On the left side a rectangular wooden window with large stained glass fanlight, an undivided rectangular wooden cross window, in which a rectangular door is placed, and a rectangular, undivided wooden window frame.
The whole is covered by an asymmetrical, in the front facades partly extending above the first storey gabled roof with improved Dutch tiles. Between the gutters varying in height is a slightly projecting, rectangular wooden staircase window with horizontal glazing bars plus a flagpole with decorative finial placed. Above the gutter is the six-fold window series of the former theatre hall, in which rectangular vertically divided wooden windows with horizontal glazing bars. Rising chimney, in which a roof dormer is integrated. The rear roof plane has a five-fold window series, of which the fourth frame is provided with rectangular, double wooden doors. Above this window series, at the height of the attic, three roof dormers with gutters.
The INTERIOR layout, with on the ground floor the former recreation rooms, is partly altered with the aid of simple partition walls. On the storey, with former theatre hall, the staircase is somewhat adapted. The theatre hall is virtually unchanged and serves as office space. Furthermore are among other things of importance: the memorial stone in the hall with the inscription 'Hymn 268. By the help of very many in city and country God be thanked this building could arise which the Vereening Suringarschool after solemn opening on 2 July 1931 dedicated to the Protestant Cause'; the remaining part of the staircase with wooden balustrade, the grey-blue-red floor tiles in the hall; the yellow tile wainscotting.
Valuation
The protestant hostel is of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a cultural, spiritual and typological development, as well as for its regionally determined innovative value.
The architectural-historical values are determined by the expressionistic building style, the involvement of architect Alphons Boosten, the high-quality aesthetic quality and the particular ornamentation.
The hostel is an important component of the urban planning ensemble around the Sterreplein and because of its situation connected with the development of this urban neighbourhood and in particular the development of the protestant enclave within it. Moreover, the building is of importance for the appearance of the neighbourhood.
The architectural integrity is still present in high degree, the importance for the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment is great. Moreover, this protestant hostel is to be called rare in architectural-historical, typological and functional respect.
