Inleiding

Introduction

CATHOLIC CHURCH of the Sacred Heart parish, known as the Dome Church, with a design inspired by oriental central building architecture. Dominantly situated in the eastern urban expansion behind the railway station. Built on the commission of Father H. Luijten, priest of the Sacred Heart Congregation, designed by architects Alphons Boosten and Jos. Ritzen. Engineer M. Huydts was responsible for the special construction of the double dome. The design was realised in three stages: the central building in 1921, the baptistery and the choir in 1929, the right-side aisle, the entrance section on Heerderweg and the Gerardus Chapel in 1953. The two towers belonging to the original design were never executed. The extensions realised after 1953 are excluded from protection.

Description

The church has an octagonal floor plan oriented to a central focal point, with extensions on a rectangular floor plan on four sides. Entrance sections are situated between these extensions both on Heerderweg and Scharnerweg.

On the central volume is a double dome roof with copper covering and ridge cross, the side spaces under flat roofs are provided with roof felt. Copper gutters and downpipes.

The external facades are provided with plinths in black basalt lava and the church itself is further constructed in Nivelstein sandstone, marl, brick and concrete artificial stone. For the extensions Ettringer tuff stone was used. The whole is provided with simple, geometric ornamentation and slightly projecting facade surfaces. The entrance on Heerderweg is characterised by a symmetrical composition of three block-shaped volumes of varying heights under flat roofs, between which lies a broad entrance staircase. The entrance is centrally placed, has the highest roof line and has three doors separated by vertically accentuated pilasters. The access on Scharnerweg is provided with a stepped-back portico in a geometrically block-shaped volume with vertical offset. The externally-placed walls in octagonal bond are finished with a recessed, octagonal gallery with buttresses, on which the reinforced concrete ring beam is attached which also supports the concrete dome vault.

Rectangular wooden panel doors with fittings and hardware.

Rectangular, round-arched and pointed-arch steel window frames, with various forms of glazing bars. The pointed-arch steel windows are provided with natural stone traceries.

The external facades enclose a reinforced concrete structure with eight pillars set into the external walls, on which above the central building two concrete domes lying one above the other - height lower dome 29 metres, diameter 24 metres - rest. The upper dome lies 2 metres higher and is covered with copper.

In the INTERIOR, in which twelve marble types are used, the following are noteworthy: 22 stained-glass windows, a wall painting plus carpet design in the Maria Chapel by Henri Jonas; relief tile stations of the cross against the wall pillars, Charles Eyck; marble high altar, Maria altar and holy water fonts, Alphons Boosten; winged retable on high altar and wrought-iron god lamp by the Utrecht artist Brom, with representations from the Book of Revelation, by H.
