Inleiding

Hardsteen. Basalt.

Introduction

A LYCEUM built in expressionist style, 1928, realised according to a design by architect W.J. Sandhövel on behalf of the Moral Association "Notre Dame de Lorette". The former lyceum is situated in the closed wall of the Grote Gracht. The extension on the left side facade from 1939 according to a design by architect A.J.N. Boosten is characterised by an architecture in which the formal language of the Nieuwe Bouwen is combined with the use of a building material traditional to the region, namely sandstone. The post-war extension on the rear facade is excluded from protection.

Description

The former LYCEUM has a U-shaped floor plan, comprises three and four storeys respectively and a roof storey and is covered with a flat roof.

The building material used is brick, laid in half-brick bond. Hardstone. Basalt. Wrought iron and wood.

The main facade on the Grote Gracht is characterised by symmetry and a strong vertical accentuation, whereby the central axis in the facade is accentuated by a risalit with vertical strips of stepped decorative brickwork, hardstone corbels and corner blocks. In this central axis the main entrance with double panel door and side lights is located on the ground floor. Due to the heavily dimensioned lintel, the entrance is horizontally accentuated. On either side of the central risalit window frames are placed over four and five storeys respectively, in varying bonds. The differing number of storeys is a result of the relatively steep slope of the plot. The plinth consists of rough basalt blocks with basement openings, the wall face of brick, the sills and lintels of natural stone. The facade is terminated by a horizontal ornamentation of a number of parallel running brick mouldings.

The EXTENSION on the west side from 1939 consists of a volume of four storeys on a rectangular floor plan, under a flat roof with overhang. The symmetry of the front facade, with basement windows in the plinth, sandstone wall face, rectangular steel cross windows in a sandstone frame and a few facade ornaments is only broken by a round steel window on the fourth storey. In the side facade a sculpture of the Virgin Mary is placed in a corner block, made by Charles Vos.

Of the INTERIOR of the design by W.J. Sandhövel, the following are of importance: the stairwell with rounded arches in yellow brick and the walls in various shades of brick; the floor in grey and green glazed tiles; stair railing in brick covered with hardstone. High leaded glass windows on the street side stairwell. Corridor walls partly clad with yellow glazed tiles. Stairwell with flat roof with a leaded glass roof window in it.

The layout of the INTERIOR of the extension from 1939 is largely intact, but contains no protected components.

Valuation

The former lyceum with extension is of cultural-historical value as an exceptional expression of a spiritual and typological development. The architectural-historical value is determined by the applied architectural styles, by the involvement of architects Sandhövel and Boosten, by the very high-quality aesthetic qualities of their design and by reason of the material use and ornamentation.

From the perspective of ensemble values, the school is important as an essential component of the protected townscape Maastricht and as such of particular significance for the appearance of the city.

Furthermore, the school has a reasonable degree of architectural integrity of the exterior and part of the interior and is important in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment.

Finally, there is a reasonable degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity.
