Inleiding

Introduction

Former municipal GAS FACTORY of Maastricht, 1912, built as a replacement for a factory dating from 1858. For the new construction, a structure in iron was originally planned, offered by the Fa. Klönne of Dortmund (D). For reasons of cost and safety, a concrete construction was chosen in which the originally designed iron structure was adopted virtually exactly.

The gas factory consists of a stokehold, bunker building, coal shed, wash and changing rooms and dining hall. The factory was built in functionalist style, according to a structural design by architect Jan Gerko Wiebenga, commissioned by the municipal enterprises Maastricht.

The contractor was the N.V. Industriële Maatschappij F.J. Stulemeijer of Breda, engineer Jan Gerko Wiebenga was employed by the aforementioned contractor. The Fa. Klönne from Dortmund was responsible for the construction of the oven installation. The stokehold was extended in 1914 with two bays.

The gas factory, which was shut down in 1930, was built on land that had been part of the fortifications "De Fronten".

Description

The gas factory has an approximately rectangular ground plan and a substructure that varies in height. By means of earth moving, the site was arranged such that a height difference of six metres arose between two horizontal planes, which are connected to each other by a sloping embankment. The gas factory comprises three interconnected structural volumes of varying height and is built as a whole at the transition between the two site levels. Flat roofs, projecting concrete roof slabs on consoles. The whole is executed as a concrete skeleton construction, reinforced with large quantities of iron. The concrete skeleton is filled in with hollow concrete blocks.

The factory is composed of three volumes, namely a coal shed, to which on the south side a high bunker building and a lower stokehold connect.

The COAL SHED on the north side measures 14x56 metres and contained seven silos. Five of these silos were demolished as a result of the construction of the new ring road (2017). Six of these silos had floors sloping at an angle of 35 degrees. From the high part of the site, a track ran over two heavy reinforced concrete beams into the covered coal shed. Above the deepest point of these silos, which together could contain 2900 tons of coal, ran an electric grab crane. This crane transported the coal to the seventh silo, which was angled at 45 degrees and functioned as a funnel. A chute conveyed the coal from there to the coal breaker. This coal shed has in the second layer of facade fields separated by concrete columns three rectangular steel six-pane windows. The shed was cut through at a point where one silo was retained in its entirety and one silo partially retained in order to keep the story of this part of the gas factory sufficiently recognizable. The remaining silos disappeared as a result of the construction of the ring road and the preservation of the fortifications. At the end face and the long side bordering the raised site section, it is completely open. The load-bearing structure of the coal shed is composed of columns, beams and cross beams, which gain a larger cross-section at their connections. The heavy beams of the track viaduct rest on yokes, which are incorporated in the compartments of the silos. The roof floor forms a whole with beams and cross beams.

Between the coal shed on the north side and the stokehold on the south side lies the BUNKER BUILDING. On a ground plan of 5.80x13.65 metres, this building contained water reservoirs for the factory's water supply, a boiler house, a high bunker, a low bunker and a stairwell. Elevators bring the coal to the high bunker.

The STOKEHOLD measures approximately 22x13.65 metres and provided space for three large ovens. The stokehold is characterized by a raised central nave, an eastern side aisle with buttresses between which, distributed over seven bays, considerable rectangular steel windows are located.

The load-bearing structure of the stokehold and the bunker building is formed by a system of heavy and light columns, which are mutually connected by beams, floors and stairs. To span the oven room, lattice girders 19.60 metres in length were installed on the upper storey of the stokehold.

Valuation

Wiebenga's gas factory is of cultural historical significance as a special expression of an administrative development (municipal responsibility for public utilities), as an expression of a technological and typological development and because of the innovative value of the design.

The building is of very special significance for the history of architecture and construction technology, because of the involvement of engineer J.G. Wiebenga and because of the material used.

The factory has a reasonable degree of architectural integrity of the exterior and is of very great importance because of the architectural history, construction technology, typological and functional rarity, combined with the relatively high age of the construction and design.
