Inleiding
AANLEG met KERKHOFMUUR MET TOEGANGSPOORTEN van de begraafplaats aan de Tongerseweg, tweede helft negentiende eeuw. De ommuring aan de noordzijde van de begraafplaats werd vanwege een na-oorlogse uitbreiding grotendeels verwijderd.
Omschrijving
De AANLEG van de begraafplaats met de verschillende begraafplaatsonderdelen en bijpassende beplanting binnen de ommuring van 1910.
De begraafplaats is aan de zuid-, west- en noordzijde omgeven door een bakstenen muur, waarin een van rijkswege beschermd poortgebouw (monumentnummer 27990), alsmede een viertal toegangspoorten. Het Joodse begraafplaatsdeel is bovendien voorzien van een eigen ommuring.
De muur is voorzien van op regelmatige afstanden geplaatste kolommen met hardstenen afdekking, ten dele gepleisterde plinten. Aan de Tongerseweg bevinden zich een tweetal toegangspoorten, aan de westzijde aparte toegangspoorten voor de Joodse begraafplaats en het ongewijde gedeelte.
Deze poorten zijn voorzien van een geprofileerde florentijnse boog in hardsteen, een hardstenen architraaflijst, alsmede een doodshoofd op de sluitsteen, hardstenen plinten en dubbele smeedijzeren hekwerken. De toegangspoort van het ongewijde deel is eenvoudiger uitgevoerd en uitsluitend opgetrokken in baksteen.
Waardering
De AANLEG van de begraafplaats is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele, sociaal-maatschappelijke, geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. Het poortgebouw en de toegangspoorten zijn van belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, beschikken over esthetische kwaliteit en zijn van importantie vanwege de ornamentiek.
Muur en poorten vormen een essentieel onderdeel van de aanleg van de begraafplaats aan de Tongerseweg, zijn vanwege de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling en uitbreiding van de stad en zijn van belang voor het aanzien van de stad. The cemetery is surrounded on the south, west and north sides by a brick wall, which contains a government-protected gate building (monument number 27990), as well as four access gates. The Jewish cemetery section is moreover provided with its own boundary wall.
The wall is provided with columns placed at regular intervals with stone coping, in part plastered plinths. On the Tongerseweg there are two access gates, on the west side separate access gates for the Jewish cemetery and the unconsecrated section.
