Inleiding
De constructeur was A.F. Baak. De aannemer was de fa. Kramer & Reynders.
Waardering

Description
Introduction
At the corner of Jacob Obrechtplein and Heinzestraat, erected in 1927-1928, a SYNAGOGUE with mikveh and adjoining (W) association building (bijsjoel) with two single-family upper dwellings in the Dudok style and in the manner of F.L. Wright, designed by H. Elte Phzn. in collaboration with C. van der Wilk and chief supervisor J.C. Koot on behalf of the Nederlandsch Israelitische Hoofdsynagoge. The official residences were intended for the first cantor and the deputy cantor-sexton. The structural engineer was A.F. Baak. The contractor was the firm Kramer & Reynders. The glazier was W. Bogtman. The synagogue (now called Raw Aron Schuster Sjoel) was consecrated on 18 May 1928.
N.B. In 1937 alteration of the second floor.
In 1945 restored by C. van der Wilk.
One of the copper lamps is now in the Joods Historisch Museum.
Description
A brick synagogue erected on a rectangular plan, doubled inward-bent to the west, consisting of three storeys and composed of different cubic building volumes under flat roofs with straight gable terminations. The strongly overhanging roof lines are positioned beneath the gable edge. The building volumes are provided with projecting and recessed wall surfaces and decorative brickwork. The elongated and narrow windows are subdivided by moulded pilasters with natural stone capitals above and are partly fitted with frosted glass and partly with stained glass. The six window strips in both short gables of the main building symbolise the twelve tribes of Israel. The stumpy tower at the Heinzestraat is provided above the elongated windows with strongly projecting canopies. On one of the projecting wall surfaces the Tablets of the Law are fixed. The entrance is reached via a gate with ornamental ironwork, partly on a brick plinth. On the left post an ornamental iron lantern. Via a hardstone step of eight treads one reaches the rectangular double wooden door with ladder-shaped windows beneath a moulded and strongly projecting canopy. To the left of the entrance, the architect's name is chiselled in hardstone.
In the gable of the association building a stone is laid with a Hebrew text chiselled in it from the Book of Proverbs 8:34, which in translation reads: 'Blessed is the man who listens to me, who keeps watch at my doors day after day and waits at the posts of my gates'. The free space to the left of the entrance arose because a tree, now gone, was spared.
Interior
The main direction, bima-ark, runs across the length of the building. The ark is placed in a large parabola-shaped niche which receives light from three strips of stained glass in the vault. The women's gallery (with 148 seats) is placed behind the building. The gallery is placed on square columns which are clad with pieces of coloured glass. Originally above it was a small choir balcony. This has, however, now been expanded to a second women's gallery. The rest of the interior is still in its entirely original state and of particularly high quality, including a tiled floor, marble wainscotting, a fountain of ceramic stone and copper lamps. The mikveh has recently been modernised.
Valuation
The synagogue is of both architectural-historical importance and importance owing to the high quality of the interior. The architectural design by architect H. Elte Phzn. is strongly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and W. Dudok. The interior is of importance because of the structural details, the panelling and marble wainscotting, the black marble ark and likewise mosaic of the columns and the glazing by Bogtman. Of very great art-historical importance are furthermore all the lamps, the copper hanging lamps and the standing lamps at the ark and bima, the ark doors, the clock and the benches. Finally of urban planning importance owing to the monumental design and the location at the corner of Jacob Obrechtplein and Heinzestraat.
