Inleiding
Klein zoldervenster in top.

Description
Introduction
A PUMPING STATION built around 1875 for regulating the historically problematic groundwater level of Vondelpark. The building provided space for a coal house and a steam pumping station. The commission for construction was possibly granted by the 'Association for the Establishment of a Riding and Walking Park'. The architect is as yet unknown. Built in an eclectic style with influences from the chalet style.
In 1907 the pumping station, also referred to in archival documents as 'coal house', was raised by 50 cm and supported by a newly built masonry footing. In 1915 the 'Conditions and provisions concerning the sale' mention: a steam boiler, a steam engine with condensation equipment, a rotary pump and a petroleum motor with accessories, as being present 'in the pumping station at the Amstelveensche weg at the Willemspark in Amsterdam'.
The boiler and steam engine were supplied by Gebr. Stork & Co. in Hengelo. The pump was driven by means of the steam engine and was designed for a water yield of approximately 325 litre/sec. at 2.25 m. head. To the left of the pumping station was the well; the drain curved northwards from the rear of the pumping station. In 1940 a transformer station of the Municipal Energy Company was built on the back grounds of the pumping station.
Description
A two-aisle brick building for a pumping station consisting of a taller right section and a slightly recessed side aisle on the left. The right section consists of two storeys. On the more recently built masonry footing a ground floor with large two-part entrance under a flattened segmental arch; the doors have segmental-shaped fanlights and a pendentive-shaped profiled spandrel. Like all the gable walls, this front facade is also built up of dark brown brick alternated with specklayers executed in yellow brick and keystones. Continuation of the front facade after a brick string-course in the upper storey, closed off on both sides by corner lisels. Two coupled lightly arched six-pane windows under brick arches. Small attic window in the gable. Small arched two-pane window in left side gable section above the low side aisle. Rising tooth frieze under the roof. Herringbone frieze on both long sides. Gabled roof with continuous and projecting profiled moulding with straight corbel brackets and executed as zinc-roved roof. On the front and back sides tie beams with modillions and brackets. Centrally placed chimney and further a chimney on the southern roof slope.
The left section, consisting of one storey, is placed as a side aisle against the main building and contains on the front a double entrance door under a depressed segmental arch; the doors have segmental-shaped fanlights and a pendentive-shaped profiled spandrel. Rising tooth frieze under the lean-to roof with projecting profiled moulding with straight corbel brackets. Lean-to roof is executed as zinc-roved roof.
On the side facade three nine-pane windows set in iron frames with tilting window and adjoining half-round fanlight with radial division. Herringbone frieze under the moulding.
Valuation
Pumping station of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value. Main form and detailing are well preserved. Further of significance due to its functional-historical value, due to the direct relationship with the regulation of the water level in the nearby Vondelpark.
