Inleiding
Op de hoek van de De Lairessestraat en Cornelis Schuytstraat aan drie zijden vrijliggend, tussen 1917 en 1920 in verstrakte Amsterdamse School-stijl opgetrokken SCHEEPVAARTKUNDIG MUSEUM (thans veilinghuis) naar een ontwerp van G.F. La Croix in opdracht van H. van der Schaar Lzn.
In 1929 glazen overkapping in opdracht van de Vereeniging Scheepvaart Museum.
Omschrijving
Voormalig Scheepvaartkundig Museum gebouwd op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een mansardedak bedekt met rode pannen met een later aangebrachte glazen overkapping en welke in 1981 bij een verbouwing veranderd is. Rood bakstenen pand bestaande uit een beganegrondverdieping, bovenverdieping en een kapverdieping met dakkapellen. Licht uitkragende met reliëfversieringen voorziene daklijst boven een eveneens uitkragend bakstenen fries. Daklijst en fries worden gedragen door bakstenen kolossale pilasters en hoeklisenen met naar binnen liggende muurvlakken waarin de vensters zijn geplaatst. De vensters zijn alle voorzien van een houten omlijsting met een golfvormige decoratie.
Aan de voorzijde beganegronds twee aan weerskanten van de entree geplaatste driehoekerkers met bovenlichten. Boven elke erker een balcon, achter een door hout afgedekte ijzeren borstwering, waarin vensters met glas-in-lood bovenlichten. Venster boven de ingang in drieën verdeeld met glas-in-lood bovenlicht. Ingangstravee met iets naar binnen gelegen entree uitgevoerd in een lichtbruine baksteen.
Zijgevel aan de De Lairessestraat bestaande uit drie traveeën waarbij elke travee vier vensterassen breed is. Alle vensters zijn van eenzelfde formaat en voorzien van schuiframen met bovenlichten waarvan die op de verdieping met glas-in-lood. Op de verdieping vier franse balcons van elk een vensteras breed met sierijzeren borstwering. Het perceel wordt aan deze zijde afgesloten door een sierijzeren hek.
Rechterzijgevel bestaande uit drie traveeën waarvan de linkertravee eenzelfde architectonische vormgeving en detaillering heeft als hierboven beschreven. De middelste en de rechtertravee zijn echter voorzien van brede vensterassen maar hebben op de verdieping eveneens glas-in-lood.
N.B. In 1974 veranderd in kantoor in opdracht van L.H. Goudsmit.
In 1981 verbouwd ten behoeve van veilinggebouw voor kunstvoorwerpen in opdracht van Christie's Amsterdam B.V.
Waardering
Voormalig scheepvaartkundig museum van cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een monumentaal pand met een museale functie.
Architectuurhistorisch van belang als waardevol voorbeeld van de verstrakte Amsterdamse School-stijl. Description
Former Maritime Museum built on a rectangular ground plan under a mansard roof covered with red tiles with a glazed covering added later and which was altered in 1981 during a renovation. Red brick building consisting of a ground floor, upper floor and an attic storey with dormers. Slightly projecting cornice with relief ornamentation above an equally projecting brick frieze. Cornice and frieze are supported by brick colossal pilasters and corner strips with inset wall surfaces in which the windows are placed. The windows are all provided with a wooden frame with a wave-shaped decoration.
On the front facade at ground floor two triangular bays placed on either side of the entrance with fanlights. Above each bay a balcony, behind an iron balustrade covered by wood, in which windows with leaded glass fanlights. Window above the entrance divided in three with leaded glass fanlight. Entrance bay with slightly inset entrance executed in light brown brick.
Side facade on the De Lairessestraat consisting of three bays each four windows wide. All windows are of the same format and provided with sash windows with fanlights of which those on the upper floor have leaded glass. On the upper floor four French balconies each one window wide with ornamental iron balustrade. The plot is enclosed on this side by an ornamental iron railing.
Right side facade consisting of three bays of which the left bay has the same architectural design and detailing as described above. The middle and right bay, however, are provided with wide window openings but also have leaded glass on the upper floor.
N.B. In 1974 altered to office use commissioned by L.H. Goudsmit.
In 1981 renovated for use as an auction building for works of art commissioned by Christie's Amsterdam B.V.
Valuation
Former maritime museum of cultural-historical value as a representative example of a monumental building with a museum function.
