Vanaf de Stadhouderskade in enigszins zuidwestelijke richting en in twee afzonderlijke fasen tot stand gekomen parkaanleg van het eerste Amsterdamse rij- en wandelpark (Vondelpark). De eerste fase kwam tot stand in 1864-65 en bestaat uit een smalle strook als aanlooproute van het eigenlijke park, ook wel 'de slurf' genoemd met daarop aansluitend een romantisch parkdeel. De aanlooproute loopt tot iets voorbij de Vondelbrug. Het 'romantische' deel kenmerkt zich door de aanwezigheid van drie golvende vijverpartijen met eilandjes (2) waartussen een stelsel van eveneens golvende rij-, wandel- en ruiterpaden is uitgezet. Het terrein is op bepaalde plekken enigszins geaccidenteerd en voorzien van in het oog vallende objecten (Vondelmonument), solitaire boomgroepen, exoten en bossages. Dit parkdeel loopt ongeveer tot aan de huidige Gerard Brandtstraat in het noorden en de Cornelis Schuytstraat in het zuiden. De tweede fase kwam gereed in 1877 en vertoont een meer landgoed-achtig karakter door de aanwezigheid van een koeien- en schapenweide. Karakteristiek voor de weides zijn de open structuur en de fantastisch uitgegroeide boomformaties als schuil- of schaduwplekje voor de dieren. Daartussenin ligt een grote speelweide. Ook in dit parkdeel een aantal golvende vijverpartijen met eilandjes (5). Geraffineerd in het ontwerp is de in de ZW-hoek uitgegraven slingerende vijverpartij die aan beide zijden doorloopt in (en aldus ook een relatie verkrijgt met) het ten zuiden van het Vondelpark gelegen Willemspark, het enige villapark van Amsterdam. Het plantenassortiment is zo gekozen dat praktisch het gehele jaar door de visuele effecten gehandhaafd blijven. De over het algemeen nog grotendeels aanwezige oorspronkelijke ruimtelijke indeling van het park bepaalt de zichtlijnen op bouwwerken, beelden, bijzondere begroeiing, waterpartijen met eilandjes, de weides en de beplanting.

From the Stadhouderskade in a somewhat southwestern direction and in two separate phases a park layout that came into being of the first Amsterdam riding and walking park (Vondelpark). The first phase came into being in 1864-65 and consists of a narrow strip as an approach route to the actual park, also called 'the snout' with adjoining a romantic park section. The approach route runs to just beyond the Vondelbrug. The 'romantic' section is characterized by the presence of three undulating water features with islets (2) between which a system of likewise undulating riding, walking and equestrian paths is laid out. The terrain is in certain places somewhat accidentated and provided with striking objects (Vondelmonument), solitary tree groups, exotic species and copses. This park section runs approximately to the current Gerard Brandtstraat in the north and the Cornelis Schuytstraat in the south. The second phase was completed in 1877 and shows a more estate-like character through the presence of a cattle and sheep meadow. Characteristic of the meadows are the open structure and the fantastically grown tree formations as shelter or shady spots for the animals. In between lies a large play meadow. Also in this park section a number of undulating water features with islets (5). Refined in the design is the meandering water feature excavated in the SW corner which runs along both sides into (and thus also acquires a relationship with) the Willemspark situated south of the Vondelpark, Amsterdam's only villa park. The plant assortment was chosen so that practically the entire year through the visual effects are maintained. The generally still largely present original spatial layout of the park determines the sight lines to buildings, statues, particular vegetation, water features with islets, the meadows and the planting.
