Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
The STELP with an adjoining OUTBUILDING on the south side was built in 1933 in Interbellum architecture approximately at the site of a burnt-down farmhouse. The farmhouse was designed by architect R. Klazinga from Grootegast (province of Groningen) on commission of O.W. van Dijk at Surhuizum. The farmhouse shows affinity with a stelp at Gerkesklooster (Sarabos 13, designed in 1938 by the same architect). The farmhouse stands on a spacious plot with a solitary weeping tree, a beech hedge and a boundary ditch at the road with a dam built in red wire-cut brickwork. Compared to the design, the roof of the farmhouse was raised during construction. The pump house with boiler house were largely demolished around 1986: a glazed wind screen has now been placed on the old masonry. In 1968 and in 1991 respectively a new cattle stable in the back yard and a young cattle stable adjoining the outbuilding were built; these fall outside national monument protection due to insufficient age.
Description
The ground plan of the main building of the farmhouse is symmetrical: rectangular with a double recess. The cavity walls of the residential part are slightly higher than the brick-built barn. The external masonry of farmhouse and outbuilding is built in flamed red Groningen wire-cut brickwork on a lime mortar bed of Groningen clinker bricks. The farmhouse has a hipped roof; the residential part has a large overhang and is covered with brown glazed Dutch tiles; the barn section is covered with thatch. In the front slope of the roof is a double gable window with single-glazed windows.
On the ridge corners of the farm buildings are new owl boards or variants thereof; on the residential house a chimney. The front and side gables of the front house are enlivened by vertically coursed gable detailing and the framing of the interior entrance porch in yellow facing bricks. The floor of the entrance porch is laid with red-and-white chequered tiles. The front door is flanked by side lights with leaded glass. On either side of the entrance porch are three-sided bay windows with fanlights with coloured leaded glass. The light openings in the farm section consist of rectangular iron rear-light stable windows. On the south side, at the side entrance is a rainwater cistern and in the location of the former boiler house and pump house a terrace. The tall rear gables of the main building and outbuilding are continuous. In them are arranged an entrance door to the cow stable fitted with a modified side light, three stable windows and passage doors; in the outbuilding a ten-light iron stable window, a door under concrete lintel, a loft door with side lights and a remnant of a small ladder. The outbuilding is built in the same materials as the farmhouse and connected to it by a party wall with a breach in it. The front gable comprises two ten-light iron stable windows, a six-light stable window, a stable door and loft door with side lights. The gabled roof of the outbuilding is covered with thatch. The layout of the residential part is virtually unchanged; the barn is largely used for storage of agricultural vehicles.
Valuation
The stelp with permanent outbuilding from 1933 designed by R. Klazinga is of cultural-historical and architectural significance:
- as an exponent of the characteristic building style of the 1930s (Interbellum architecture),
- due to the high degree of integrity of the exterior,
- due to the simple but carefully executed detailing,
- due to the high degree of integrity of the building's layout.
