Inleiding
In opdracht van de kerkvoogden van de Hervormde kerk van Surhuizum ontwierp de architect J.C. Velding in 1928 een rechthoekig VERENIGINGSGEBOUW aan het zandpad ten zuiden van de kerk. Het werd in 1929 gebouwd. Hierin waren ondergebracht een vergaderlokaal en een bestuurskamer, gescheiden door een paneelwand. De entree is gesitueerd in het torenachtig bouwlichaam met een plat afgedekte (luid-) zolder, waarop tot ca. 1954-56 een met lood beklede koepel stond. De bouwtrant van het gebouw is geïnspireerd op de Amsterdamse School, hetgeen met name tot uiting komt in details van het metselwerk en de parabolische boog van de toegang tot het voorportaal.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw op rechthoekig grondplan bestaat uit een bouwlaag met hoge kap. Het pand is opgetrokken in roodbruine handvorm bakstenen op een trasraam van donkerbruine handvorm bakstenen in kettingverband (Noors verband), met diepe lintvoeg en platvolle stootvoeg. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een rand strekken; het metselwerk in de geveltop is in visgraatmotief. Daar waar het torenlichaam de gevellijst doorsnijdt dient de streklaag als band rondom het torenlichaam, juist onder de vierkante galmopeningen. De zijkanten van de voor- en achtergevel zijn als steunberen uit het lood en zich verjongend opgemetseld. Het zadeldak is belegd met zwart geglazuurde Holl. pannen. De goot rust op een uitkragend gemetselde gootlijst. De hiërarchie van de lichtopeningen is van onder naar boven: vensters, lichtspleten, luchtopening. Aan de noordzijde zijn drie vernieuwde smalle H-vensters; de westgevel bevat drie vernieuwde enkelruits vensters met zij- en bovenlichtstroken; aan de oostzijde resteert nog een klein venster. In de topgevel van de noord- en zuidgevel zijn drie smalle glasstroken in het metselwerk opgenomen als lichtopeningen voor de zolder; dergelijke lichtstroken zijn op dezelfde hoogte in de toren aangebracht. De hoogte van de zeven vierkante galmopeningen in de toren correspondeert met de luchtspleten met horizontale schuin neergeklapte latjes in de geveltop aan voor- en achterzijde. Een parabolische boog met een gemetselde getrapte omlijsting verleent toegang tot het voorportaal in het torenlichaam. In de linkermuur zit een gedenksteen gemetseld met het opschrift: GEBOUWD 1929 KERKVOOGDEN J. BUMA C. SCHUURMAN M. POSTHUMUS Ds. A. STEENBEEK. De zwarte, opgeklampte toegangsdeur is voorzien van oorspronkelijk hang en sluitwerk. Inpandig is de gang gewijzigd in 1956 en later vanwege de aanbouwingen; de lambrizeringen van de beide zalen is aanwezig, met dien verstande dat de tussenwand thans scharnierend wegklapbaar is.

On behalf of the church wardens of the Reformed Church of Surhuizum, architect J.C. Velding designed in 1928 a rectangular ASSOCIATION BUILDING at the sand path south of the church. It was built in 1929. It housed a meeting room and a management room, separated by a panelled wall. The entrance is situated in the tower-like building mass with a flat-roofed (bell) loft, on which stood a cupola clad in lead until about 1954-56. The building style of the building is inspired by the Amsterdam School, which is expressed in particular in details of the brickwork and the parabolic arch of the entrance to the entrance portico.
Description
The building on a rectangular ground plan consists of one storey with a high roof. The building is constructed in reddish-brown handmade bricks on a clinker foundation of dark brown handmade bricks in chain bond (Norwegian bond), with deep mortar joints and flat full bed joints. The facade is finished with a course of stretchers; the brickwork in the gable top is in a herringbone pattern. Where the tower mass intersects the facade line, the course serves as a band around the tower mass, just below the square belfry openings. The sides of the front and rear facades are constructed as plumb buttresses tapering upwards. The gabled roof is laid with black glazed Dutch tiles. The gutter rests on a projecting masoned gutter line. The hierarchy of light openings is from bottom to top: windows, light slits, air opening. On the north side are three renewed narrow H-windows; the west facade contains three renewed single-light windows with side and fanlight strips; on the east side a small window remains. In the top gable of the north and south facades, three narrow glass strips are incorporated in the brickwork as light openings for the loft; similar light strips are fitted at the same height in the tower. The height of the seven square belfry openings in the tower corresponds to the air slits with horizontally slanted hinged louvres in the gable top at front and rear. A parabolic arch with a masoned stepped surround provides access to the entrance portico in the tower mass. In the left wall a memorial stone is set in with the inscription: BUILT 1929 CHURCH WARDENS J. BUMA C. SCHUURMAN M. POSTHUMUS Ds. A. STEENBEEK. The black, clasp-fastened entrance door is equipped with original hinges and fastenings. Internally the corridor was modified in 1956 and later due to the annexes; the wall cladding of both rooms is present, with the proviso that the partition wall is now hinged to fold away.
