INLEIDING

INTRODUCTION

The factory site is situated to the southeast of the core of Scheemda between the new national highway 7 and the Winschoterdiep. Already at the construction of the first factory, a branch to the Winschoterdiep was laid out so that the factory could be reached by ship.

The watercourse was filled in during the seventies, but is still recognisable in the land division and at the bridge over the old national highway 7 along the diep.

On the factory site there are two factory buildings Toekomst I and II which are identical in layout and form mirror images of each other in plan.

On the south side of the site, at the entrance of the site, the Toekomstlaan, there is a former director's residence and on the Oosthoflaan there are successively a former foreman's residence with stables and a number of workers' cottages, which as such were probably built by the cooperative for the housing of personnel. Between the two factories there are still the freestanding buildings: the lime shed (1949) the turf or packing shed and the ruins of a small transformer house. On the south side of Toekomst II there is a pair of steel storage tanks for heavy fuel oil.

Both buildings and parts of the site are in use for the storage of paper machines and other objects.

The protection proposal concerns exclusively the complex of Toekomst II, the oil tanks and the lime shed.

The other buildings of the factory complex have been altered over the years in such a way that, although still characteristic and as such recognisable, they are not considered further. The turf shed was recently (1994) destroyed by fire.

DESCRIPTION OF TOEKOMST II.

Factory building with machinery erected in 1908 after a design by architect P.G. Cremer by the Cooperative Association Toekomst.

Functional, focused on the production process, articulated contiguous complex in regional traditionalist sober style with a monumental front facade.

The oblong plan of 130 by 45 metres is composed of rectangles around a central production hall for paper machines, flanked on three sides by finishing, packing and storage spaces, each one storey high. On the fourth side it is bounded over the entire width of the complex by raw material processing halls (pulp production) mostly comprising one storey. On the other side of this hall are the two supply units for raw materials and energy respectively in the form of a straw shredding machine room and an engine house with boiler house and associated chimney. In the building there is an underground well and channel system for the water and pulp transport required for the factory process. Near the boiler house stand two cylindrical steel oil tanks. Near the straw shredding space stands a later-built lime hut.

The facades of the factory are entirely built of brick. Almost all door and window openings are executed with arches. The doors are executed as wooden panelled doors and the window openings are fitted with cast iron frames.

The monumental front facade, which shows mannerist and neo-Romanesque style characteristics, is composed of a combination of gable and longitudinal facades of the adjoining spaces and is dominated by the stepped, two-storey-high, gable of the main building, the cookery. In the facade there is at the top a natural stone plaque with the text "TOEKOMST".

In the lower half two large, double, arched, cast iron windows with glazing bars and above them six smaller cast iron windows.

To the right of it the longitudinal facade of the engine hall with five window openings and the symmetrically constructed gable of the high boiler house with a large central window flanked by two double doors. The brick chimney is placed centrally on the axis of the boiler house and dominates by its height of 45 metres the complex. The chimney is provided with a hardstone-capped pedestal and is furnished with yellow brick ornamentation, as was customary for that time, laid in the bond.

To the left of the cookery the straight facade of the generator room which with two equal windows adjoins the lower storey of the cookery. Next to it the nine-bay-long longitudinal facade, articulated by projecting brickwork, with in the middle a gable executed with stepped decorative brickwork with door and lattice window.

Finally two identical gables of the two-aisle storage room with double door flanked by a pair of windows, crowned by a lattice window, with similar decorative brickwork.

The northern side facade is a simple longitudinal facade with gutters composed of thirteen bays.

The rear facade is executed soberly with alternating gable and longitudinal facades and does not show the monumental composition of the front facade. Centrally stands the gable of the cookery, flanked by the sloping longitudinal facades of the shredding space and on the right side the beating engine room. The facade of the adhesive room is simply provided with regularly placed openings and the facade is terminated by the two gables of the storage room.

The southern side facade likewise consists of the sober longitudinal facades of the boiler house with the dominant chimney and, set back, the side facade of the cookery and the half-open facade of the shredding space.

The paper machine hall located inside the complex protrudes with its standing mansard-roofed ventilation monitors above the complex as seen from front and back.

The lime hut is a simple building on a rectangular plan with lime storage, transport and slaking space covered with a gabled roof.

The roof structures of the various components of the factory show great variation depending on the size of the span and the climate conditions.

Remarkable for the factory is the application of three iron roof trusses (span 21 m.) according to the Polonceau system in the boiler house and iron construction according to English system for the nine trusses (span 11 m.) in the cookery. The paper machine hall is likewise provided with an iron mansard roof with ventilation monitor of eleven trusses (span 19 m.) according to English construction and the packing and dispatch room with an iron truss construction of eight trusses (span 13 m.) of a Belgian system. The other roof structures are practical steel and wooden constructions of that time.

Characteristic is the application of cement tiles for the covered roofs and the application of corrugated galvanised steel sheet as light roof covering on wet and warm spaces.

Interior: Machinery in which various components of the former production process of the straw-board factory Toekomst II are still recognisably preserved.

Boiler installation, mainly from 1939, of four Cornwall boilers with fire-tube water-tube boilers with superheater, economiser and other accessories, and automatic coal transport installation and oil-burner installation.

Machinery installation, mainly from 1939, with steam engine, manufactured by Stork, horizontal single-cylinder back-pressure engine 960 hp with built-on open three-phase generator 600 KVA with accessories and extended shaft with pulley and bearings with a Wulfel-Hill friction coupling.

Transmission installation, with drive to and in the cookery for the driving of the cookery.

Pulp production installation, consisting of two iron lime vats, three iron beater apparatus with drive mechanism, two refining stones with drive and two brick pulp vats with stirring installation and a wooden pulp supply chute with six discharge chutes and all other accessories.

A Nyblad straw shredding machine with drive mechanism, transport installation and other accessories.

ASSESSMENT.

Largely well-preserved straw-board factory Toekomst II with machinery from 1908 of architectural history, industrial archaeological and economic historical significance.

Good example of complex factory construction on a functional basis with a typical monumental, regional architectural appearance. Last example of the straw-board production business developed around the turn of the century in the province of Groningen and important until the sixties.

Because of the cooperative principle of the factory, a representative example of social and economic changes in agriculture and industry. In conjunction with the building a rare and fairly complete machinery.
