Inleiding

Introduction

The SHOP-DWELLING with workshop was realised in 1930 in Opeinde according to a design by Bosma's Architecten Bureaux (from Drachten-Heerenveen) on behalf of E.C. Hogendijk. The L-shaped building is positioned with its northern long facade set back from the public road, separated from it by a lawn in front of the residential section and a tiled area in front of the shop and workshop section. The separation of functions in the building is reflected in its exterior. The taller residential section is situated on the eastern side of the building, the workshop on the western side; the shop is located between them. At the rear of the building is a spacious garden with a concrete storage shed built in 1971 which falls outside national monument protection due to its limited architectural value.

Description

The shop-dwelling has an L-shaped floor plan. The residential section is built in two storeys, the shop section with garage in one storey; the ridge line of the shop and workshop section corresponds with the roof edge of the residential section. Both composite, overhanging hipped roofs are covered with red improved Dutch tiles. On the eastern and southern roof slopes above the residential section stand two brick chimneys. The external brickwork consists of brown facing bricks. The residential section has a rectangular bay window extending over the upper floor and black sooted brick decorative bands. Below the flower box on the upper floor an enamel advertising board with the text: BATAVUS RIJWIELEN. The large horizontal bay windows and the window at the shop section with side lights have striking, broadly profiled frames. Both windows on the ground floor have attractively coloured leaded glass fanlights; the window on the upper floor has leaded glass glazing bars. The wooden door with four-light window and side light in the porch are set in broad mouldings for two-thirds of their width.

The facade section breaking through the roof slope on the upper floor is boarded; the four-light window has leaded glass glazing bars. In the side of the internal porch is a second four-pane door to the shop section. The adjacent workshop section has a slightly recessed building line. A replaced garage door at the location of the original extends from the base of the facade to the gutter. The detailing and window arrangement on the side and rear facades of the building is comparable to that of the front facade, although largely more austere in the business section. Striking is a seven-pane strip window with broad frames in the western side facade. Also on the rear facade of the residential section coloured leaded glass, glazing bars and broad frames. The rectangular downpipes are original.

The interior of the various components is largely unchanged. Between the garage and shop is a sliding partition; in the shop are among other things the wall cabinet and the display case still present; the layout and detailing of the dwelling is original.

Valuation

The shop-dwelling with garage, realised in 1930 in Opeinde, is of general cultural historical importance:

- as an expression of a socio-economic development,

- as a particular expression of a typological development of a middle-class dwelling with adjoining business section,

- because of the reasonable aesthetic quality of the design,

- because of the coherence between interior and exterior, whereby the functional distinction between the components of the building can be read from the exterior,

- because of the very high degree of architectural integrity,

- because of the high degree of integrity of the interior,

- because of its location on the ribbon-form expansion towards Drachten.
