Inleiding

Bakstenen optrek, gemetseld in kruisverband. Kunststenen plinten en dorpels. Gevellijsten in kunststeen en keramiek. Diverse rollagen.

Introduction

Semi-detached TOWNHOUSE, in an expressionist-influenced building tradition, designed in 1924 by Vaals architect M. Schrouff on commission of Baroness von Furth. During the war years the house served as an office of the German S.A., by which it received the name "BRAUNHAUS". From 1946 fitted out as a gendarmerie barracks. Extension to the rear facade used as an armoury and subsequently raised by the construction of a shower room. In 1949, two cells were placed by the Firstly Present Engineer of the Engineers at Venlo in the former wash kitchen on the ground floor, whereby the originally placed supplier entrance in the front facade was blocked up. Since c. 1990 the house has been in use as a general practitioner's surgery. The construction of the armoury and the attached garages in the back garden are excluded from protection.

Description

The floor plan of this townhouse has a rectangular main form, with round bay window and rectangular extension to the rear facade. Two storeys in the longitudinal direction, largely with basement, partly fitted with a double crawl space. The whole is placed under a composite, slightly curved gabled and hipped roof with slate in Maas covering, L-shaped ridge line and gutter-boxes. Three chimneys. Three dormer windows on the side of the Prins Bernhardlaan, stripped of the original shutters. One dormer window on the rear.

Brick construction, mortared in Flemish bond. Artificial stone plinths and sills. Facade cornices in artificial stone and ceramic. Various courses.

Front facade risalit under roof section in transverse direction, characterised by a raised roof line. In this is located a double front facade bay window and a porch with wooden canopy on double wooden columns. This porch has facade panels with decorative brickwork in block bond and a facade stone with the coat of arms of the Baroness von Fürth.

Round rear facade bay window with original double terrace doors and window frames with original glazing bars. The bay window has recently been fitted with double secondary windows and a new balcony balustrade. Between the bay window and the rear facade is an extension, in which a window has been blocked up and a second reduced. On the former balcony a shower room has been built. Next to the armoury is a staircase which provides access to the basement.

In the front facade porch is a rectangular, double wooden panel door with, relative to the centre post, mirrored diamond-shaped glass panels. Above the canopy a three-pane door fanlight with horizontal glazing bars, fitted with stained glass. Beside it, a vertically articulated toilet window with twelve-pane glazing bars. Rectangular wooden, vertically articulated windows with horizontal glazing bars, partly with recent secondary windows. These were originally fitted with louvre shutters, of which the hinge points and the fastenings are still present.

Valuation

The residential building at Maastrichterlaan 123 is of supra-regional cultural-historical and typological importance because of the German military purpose during the Second World War and use as a gendarmerie barracks. From an architectural-historical perspective, the building is of regional importance because of the style, as a specimen of the oeuvre of architect Schrouff in Vaals and because of the aesthetic quality of the design.

The house has ensemble value as an important component of the linear built development along the Maastrichterlaan, because of the location which is connected with the development and/or expansion of Vaals and because of its importance for the appearance of Vaals. The reasonable architectural-historical integrity plus the importance of the building for the visual integrity of the built environment confers supra-regional rarity value of cultural-historical and typological nature.
