Inleiding
Met elementen van het Expressionisme in 1922 naar een ontwerp van architect Jos Wielders uit Sittard gebouwde KATHOLIEKE KERK ter ere van de H. Franciscus van Assisië. Oplopende toegangstrap, deels geflankeerd door een laag natuursteen muurtje met hierop een smeedijzeren leuning. De kruiswegstaties zijn op grond van ouderdom vooralsnog uitgesloten van bescherming.
Bijzonderheden: de verbouwde oude kerk, opgetrokken in mergel in 1838 en eveneens gewijd aan de H. Franciscus van Assisië, staat naast de huidige kerk.
Omschrijving
De parochiekerk heeft een in dwarsrichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond met afgeronde hoeken. De kerk telt eenbouwlaag en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met leien. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen in twee tinten. De kerk wordt volledig gedomineerd door de toren. De in de basis van de toren geplaatste deur wordt geflankeerd door twee bakstenen kolommen. Rechthoekige stalen glas in lood vensters. Spitsboogvormige stalen glas in lood vensters. Houten rechthoekige deur. Boven de deur bevindt zich in een iets vooruitspringend deel van de gevel, een groot spitsboogvormig venster. Het motief van de twee baksteen kolommen is herhaald bij de vormgeving van de hoekpartijen van het schip. De gevels maken een zeer massieve indruk door de kleine venstertjes die in horizontale reeksen dicht bij elkaar geplaatst zijn. Van het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang: de glas in lood ramen van Dr. H. Oidtmann (Linnich, Duitsland) met patronen van Baron en Barones van der Loe van Imstenraedt, uit 1922 en van het atelier F. Nicolas en Zonen uit Roermond; schilderingen op de spitsbogen voor en achter het altaar van Joan Collette uit 1926 ( gerestaureerd door Sjef Hutschemakers) ; veertien kruiswegstaties: schilderijen van Charles Eijck uit 1958; zwarte natuurstenen doopvont uit ca. 1890 met koperen deksel; hoofdaltaar, Maria- en Jozefaltaar en banken en biechtstoelen naar een ontwerp van Jos Wielders, hoofdaltaar bekleed met witte en zwarte marmer in Art Deco motieven.
Waardering
De R.K. Sint Franciscuskerk van Reijmerstok is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. De kerk bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, voor het oeuvre van architect Jos Wielders en wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp. CATHOLIC CHURCH in honour of H. Francis of Assisi, built circa 1922 with elements of Expressionism after a design by architect Jos Wielders from Sittard. Rising entrance stairs, partly flanked by a low natural stone wall with wrought-iron railings on top. The Stations of the Cross are for the time being excluded from protection on grounds of age.
Special features: the converted old church, built in marl in 1838 and likewise dedicated to H. Francis of Assisi, stands next to the present church.
Description
The parish church has a rectangular floor plan placed in the transverse direction with rounded corners. The church has one storey and is covered with a gabled roof with slate. The building material used is brick in two shades. The church is completely dominated by the tower. The door placed in the base of the tower is flanked by two brick columns. Rectangular steel stained-glass windows. Pointed-arched steel stained-glass windows. Wooden rectangular door. Above the door, in a slightly projecting part of the facade, is a large pointed-arched window. The motif of the two brick columns is repeated in the design of the corner sections of the nave. The facades make a very massive impression through the small windows placed close together in horizontal rows. Of the INTERIOR the following are of particular importance: the stained-glass windows by Dr. H. Oidtmann (Linnich, Germany) with patterns of Baron and Baroness van der Loe van Imstenraedt, from 1922 and by the atelier F. Nicolas and Sons from Roermond; paintings on the pointed arches before and behind the altar by Joan Collette from 1926 (restored by Sjef Hutschemakers); fourteen Stations of the Cross: paintings by Charles Eijck from 1958; black natural stone font from circa 1890 with copper lid; high altar, Mary and Joseph altar and benches and confessionals after a design by Jos Wielders, high altar clad in white and black marble in Art Deco motifs.
