Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de gesloten, uit eind negentiende-eeuwse herenhuizen bestaande, noordelijke gevelwand van de Praediniussingel, deel uitmakend van een symmetrisch opgezet ensemble van drie aaneengeschakelde herenhuizen, gebouwd in 1896 in opdracht van de gebroeders Th. en P. Hovingh in een eclectische bouwstijl met stijlkenmerken van de neo-Renaissance. Het gebouw is thans nog in gebruik als woonhuis. De aanbouw aan de achterzijde uit de jaren twintig is van ondergeschikt belang. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak, belegd met een zwarte Friese golfpan. Horizontaal wordt het gebouw geleed door doorlopende stuc cordonlijsten en friezen. Een hardstenen steektrap van zes treden met smeedijzeren hekwerken leidt naar de toegang met een dubbele, fraai bewerkte deur. De vensters zijn rechtgesloten en hebben segmentboogvormige ontlastingsbogen met stuc negblokken en sluitstenen; de boogtrommels zijn voorzien van schelpvullingen en maaswerk van baksteen. De topgevel heeft een afgeknotte, gebogen top met geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk als afdekking. De top is versierd met cartouches waarin het bouwjaar is verwerkt. Inwendig is de oorspronkelijke structuur, indeling en aankleding vrij goed bewaard gebleven. Van belang zijn onder meer de rijk geornamenteerde stuc plafonds op de bel étage en de houten trap met fraai gesneden balusters. Waardering HERENHUIS, deel uitmakend van een ensemble van drie, gebouwd in 1896 in een eclectische bouwstijl met stijlkenmerken van de neo-Renaissance, typisch voor de architectuur uit het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw, van algemeen belang uit stedebouwkundig, cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch oogpunt als gaaf onderdeel van de hoogwaardige stedebouwkundige structuur van de singelreeks aan de zuidkant van de binnenstad van de stad Groningen.

Introduction TOWNHOUSE, situated in the closed, consisting of late nineteenth-century townhouses, northern facade of the Praediniussingel, forming part of a symmetrically arranged ensemble of three adjoining townhouses, built in 1896 on commission of the brothers Th. and P. Hovingh in an eclectic architectural style with stylistic features of neo-Renaissance. The building is currently still in use as a residence. The extension on the rear side from the nineteen-twenties is of subordinate importance. Description The building is constructed on a rectangular plan and consists of a basement and two storeys under a gabled roof, covered with black Frisian corrugated tiles. Horizontally the building is articulated by continuous stucco cordon mouldings and friezes. A hardstone flight of six steps with wrought-iron railings leads to the entrance with a double, finely worked door. The windows are straight-closed and have segmental relieving arches with stucco voussoirs and keystones; the arch drums are provided with shell fillings and brick tracery. The gable has an abated, curved top with profiled stucco moulding as coping. The top is decorated with cartouches in which the building year is incorporated. Internally the original structure, layout and decoration has been fairly well preserved. Of importance are among others the richly ornamented stucco ceilings on the bel étage and the wooden staircase with finely carved balusters. Valuation TOWNHOUSE, forming part of an ensemble of three, built in 1896 in an eclectic architectural style with stylistic features of neo-Renaissance, typical of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact component of the high-quality urban planning structure of the canal ring on the south side of the city centre of Groningen.
