Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de nagenoeg gesloten, noordelijke gevelwand van de Ubbo Emmiussingel, gebouwd in 1885 in opdracht van Mevr. de Wed. J.S.B.A. Tellegen-van Ittersum in een neo-classicistische bouwstijl. In 1906 is aan de achtergevel een aanbouw en verlengde gang met binnenplaats aangebracht. Het gebouw is sinds 1954 in gebruik genomen als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Sinds 1994 wordt het gebouw particulier bewoond. Omschrijving Het monumentale gebouw is opgetrokken op een in hoofvorm rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een laag, afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een zwarte pan. De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed en opgetrokken uit roodbruine baksteen. De gevel waarvan de hoeken iets teruggeplaatst zijn, is voorzien van een hardstenen plint. De voorgevel is in hoogte, tussen de verdiepingen, geleed door geprofileerde stucbanden, die tevens als doorlopende borstweringen voor de vensters dienen. Ter plaatse van de eerste verdieping zijn in de band balusters aangebracht. De band langs de tweede verdieping is versierd met konische noppen. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een vlakke kroonlijst met tandlijst, die een geprofileerde bakgoot draagt. De gevelopeningen, vensters en deur, zijn voorzien van strekken met daarin opgenomen gestucte sluitstenen. De vensters en deur op de begane grond en de vensters van de tweede verdieping zijn rechtgesloten. De vensters van de bel étage zijn enigszins getoogd. De toegang is voorzien van een dubbele, besneden deur en een hardstenen stoep. De achtergevels zijn grijs gestuct en voorzien van schijnvoegen. De aanbouw aan de achtergevel uit 1906 telt één bouwlaag onder een plat dak en bevat rechtgesloten T-vensters. Waardering HERENHUIS, sober vormgegeven in een neo-classisictische bouwstijl, kenmerkend voor de architectuur van het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de fraaie proporties van de gevel. Bovendien vormt het gebouw een gaaf onderdeel van de nagenoeg gesloten, waardevolle bebouwing aan de noordzijde van de Ubbo Emmiussingel en als zodanig een belangrijk element in de hoogwaardige stedebouwkundige structuur van de singelreeks langds de zuidkant van de binnenstad van Groningen.

Introduction TOWNHOUSE, situated in the virtually closed, northern gable wall of the Ubbo Emmiussingel, built in 1885 on behalf of Mrs. the Widow J.S.B.A. Tellegen-van Ittersum in a neo-classical building style. In 1906 an extension and lengthened passage with courtyard were added to the rear facade. The building has been in use as an office since 1954 and has been adapted internally for this purpose. Since 1994 the building has been privately occupied. Description The monumental building is erected on a predominantly rectangular ground plan and comprises three storeys under a low, hipped roof, covered with black tiles. The front facade is four bays wide and erected in reddish-brown brick. The facade, the corners of which are slightly set back, is provided with a hardstone plinth. The front facade is articulated in height, between the storeys, by profiled stucco bands, which also serve as continuous parapets for the windows. At the level of the first upper storey, balusters have been inserted in the band. The band along the second upper storey is decorated with conical knobs. The facade is finished with a flat cornice with tooth moulding, which carries a profiled gutter. The facade openings, windows and door, are provided with stretches with incorporated stuccoed keystones. The windows and door on the ground floor and the windows of the second upper storey are closed on the right. The windows of the bel étage are somewhat arched. The entrance is provided with a double, carved door and a hardstone step. The rear facades are grey stuccoed and provided with false joints. The extension to the rear facade from 1906 comprises one storey under a flat roof and contains closed-on-the-right T-windows. Assessment TOWNHOUSE, soberly designed in a neo-classical building style, characteristic of the architecture of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design and the fine proportions of the facade. Furthermore, the building forms an intact component of the virtually closed, valuable development on the north side of the Ubbo Emmiussingel and as such an important element in the high-quality urban planning structure of the ring of canals along the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
