Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de nagenoeg gesloten, noordelijke gevelwand van de Ubbo Emmiussingel en door twee brandgangen gescheiden van de belendende bebouwing, gebouwd in 1886 in opdracht van C. Dasse Viëtor in een neo-Empire bouwstijl. Het gebouw is sinds de jaren vijftig van deze eeuw ingericht als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Slechts de houten trap in het trappenhuis is nog oorspronkelijk. Thans is het gebouw in gebruik als kantoor. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain met twee bouwlagen en een mezzanine-verdieping onder een laag schilddak, belegd met een geribde, ruitvormige platte pan. De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed en opgetrokken uit bruinroze baksteen. Aan de voorgevel ontbreekt nagenoeg iedere toegevoegde verfraaiing. De iets getoogd gesloten gevelopeningen zijn voorzien van strekken met hardstenen sluitstukken, die met de hardstenen vensterbanken enige plasticiteit aan het oppervlak geven. Een vijftredige stoep met smeed- en gietijzeren leuningen en hekwerk leidt naar de toegang. Deze bestaat uit een rijk besneden deur met panelen en fronton, een kalf en bovenlicht. De bovenlichten van deur en vensters zijn voorzien van glas-in-lood. Een gootlijst met schijnspiegels en een bakgoot die gedragen wordt door een groot aantal klossen, als zodanig lijkend op een tandlijst, onttrekt de voorzijde van de kap deels aan het zicht. Introduction TOWNHOUSE, situated in the almost closed, northern facade of the Ubbo Emmiussingel and separated from the adjoining buildings by two fire corridors, built in 1886 on behalf of C. Dasse Viëtor in a neo-Empire architectural style. The building has been arranged as an office since the nineteen-fifties and has been internally adapted for this purpose. Only the wooden staircase in the stairwell is still original. Currently the building is in use as an office. Description The building is erected on a plan that is essentially rectangular and consists of a basement with two storeys and a mezzanine storey under a shallow hipped roof, covered with a ribbed, diamond-shaped flat tile. The front facade is four bays wide and built in brownish-pink brick. The front facade lacks almost any applied ornamentation. The slightly arched window openings are provided with surrounds with hard stone lintels, which together with the hard stone window sills give some plasticity to the surface. A five-step stoop with wrought-iron and cast-iron railings and fencing leads to the entrance. This consists of a richly carved door with panels and pediment, a half-light and fanlight. The fanlights of door and windows are provided with stained glass. A gutter moulding with schematic mirrors and a roof gutter supported by a large number of blocks, as such resembling a dentil moulding, partially obscures the front of the roof from view. Assessment Townhouse, carefully designed in the neo-Empire building tradition, of general importance because of the applied materials, the fine composition of the facade and from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as a well-preserved component of the high-quality urban planning structure of the ring road series on the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
