Inleiding
WOONHUIS, gesitueerd op de hoek van de gesloten, zuidelijke gevelwand van de Vismarkt en de Pelsterstraat, gebouwd in 1897 in opdracht van R.J. Escher in een karakteristieke, laat-eclectische bouwstijl. De begane grond verdieping is momenteel in gebruik als winkel en daartoe aangepast met een moderne toegang in de uitgebouwde gevel aan de Pelsterstraat. De bovenverdieping is in gebruik als kantoor met woning en daartoe inwendig aangepast.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak. De voorgevel is drie raamtraveeën breed. De voor- en zijgevels zijn opgemetseld uit roodbruine baksteen. Beide gevels hebben op de begane grond een met marmer beklede pui die echter niet oorspronkelijk is. De voorgevel heeft op de verdiepingen drie rondboogvensters. De middentravee risaleert halfsteens en is omkaderd met stuc lijstwerk, sluitblokken en diamantkoppen. De gevel wordt aan weerszijden afgesloten door bakstenen pilasters met facetten en kapitelen in stuc. De eerste verdieping wordt afgesloten door een omlopende zware, geprofileerde stuc cordonlijst. In het midden op de eerste verdieping van de zijgevel bevindt zich een brede, trapeziumvormige houten erker met gekleurd glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten in Art Nouveau-stijl. Voorts bevat de zijgevel een drietal rechtgesloten vensters met strekken en stuc negblokken en sluitstenen. Op de tweede verdieping bevindt zich in de middentravee een balkon op consoles met leeuwekoppen en een houten open balustrade. De gevels worden afgesloten door een brede stuc kroonlijst, die op de hoeken en op het risaliet van consoles zijn voorzien, die een geprofileerde bakgoot dragen. Tegen het voordakschild is een kajuit met stuc wangen en tympaan uitgemetseld. Het dubbele kajuitvenster bevat geprofileerd, stuc lijstwerk. Inwendig nog van belang de houten tochtdeur met geëtst glazen middenpaneel met een pauw en zijlichten met irissen in Art Nouveau-stijl, het houten trappenhuis en het gekleurd glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten van de erker op de eerste verdieping en van de vensters op de tweede verdieping.

DWELLING HOUSE, situated on the corner of the closed, southern facade wall of the Vismarkt and the Pelsterstraat, built in 1897 on the instructions of R.J. Escher in a characteristic, late eclectic building style. The ground floor storey is currently in use as a shop and has been adapted accordingly with a modern entrance in the extended facade on the Pelsterstraat. The upper storey is in use as an office with dwelling and has been internally adapted accordingly.
Description
The building is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys under a truncated hipped roof. The front facade is three window bays wide. The front and side facades are constructed of reddish-brown brick. Both facades have on the ground floor a facade covered with marble which, however, is not original. The front facade has on the storeys three round-arched windows. The middle bay projects half a brick and is framed with stucco moulding, closing blocks and diamond heads. The facade is finished on both sides by brick pilasters with facets and capitals in stucco. The first storey is finished with a continuous heavy, moulded stucco string course. In the middle on the first storey of the side facade there is a wide, trapezoidal wooden bay window with coloured leaded glass in the fanlights in Art Nouveau style. Furthermore, the side facade contains three square-headed windows with stretches and stucco blocking and closing stones. On the second storey there is in the middle bay a balcony on consoles with lion heads and a wooden open balustrade. The facades are finished with a broad stucco cornice, which on the corners and on the projection are provided with consoles, which carry a moulded gutter. Against the front roof section a cabin with stucco cheeks and tympanum has been constructed. The double cabin window contains moulded, stucco moulding. Internally still of importance the wooden draught door with etched glazed centre panel with a peacock and side lights with irises in Art Nouveau style, the wooden staircase and the coloured leaded glass in the fanlights of the bay window on the first storey and of the windows on the second storey.
Appraisal
DWELLING HOUSE, erected in a late, eclectic building style, characteristic of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a representative of eclecticism in nineteenth-century architecture with an intact decoration scheme. Moreover, the building forms an architecturally important element in the valuable urban planning space of the Vismarkt in Groningen.
