Inleiding BADHUIS, genaamd Rabbinaatshuis, gesitueerd op de hoek van de Nieuwstad en de Folkingestraat nabij de synagoge van Groningen, gebouwd in 1890 als badhuis met badmeesterswoning, winkelhuis en vergaderzaal voor de Joodse gemeente naar ontwerp van directeur gemeentewerken A. Schram de Jong in een eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is in 1988 gerestaureerd en verbouwd tot wooneenheden en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Omschrijving Het markante gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een Friese golfpan. Het rechthoekige bouwvolume is met gevels, pilasters en lijstwerk afgewisseld, waarmee de drie delen van het gebouw zijn aangeduid: de voormalige winkelpui met rondboogvensters en pilasters met spiegels op de hoek, een vleugel van drie raamtraveeën breed aan de Nieuwstad en uiterst links een smal poortrisaliet. De voorgevel van het winkelgedeelte, uitziend op de Folkingestraat, is met lijstwerk bestuct. De zijgevel aan de Folkingestraat is door middel van pilasters in tweeën gedeeld. Op de verdieping bevindt zich een groot driedelig venster, geflankeerd door twee blindnissen en gedekt met een segmentvormige tympaan. In de geveltop, gevormd door een rechthoekige muurdam en driehoekige invullingen met stucwerk, is een rondvenster aangebracht. De aansluitende vleugel aan de Nieuwstad heeft drie van lijstwerk voorziene kruisvensters op de begane grond. Het lijstwerk loopt als borstwering bij de ramen op de verdieping door. Deze ramen hebben ronde boogtrommels met geschilderde florale versiering. Het poortrisaliet springt een halve steen naar voren. De poort bestaat uit een aedicula-opbouw (pilasters op hoge sokkels, die een kroonlijst met segmentvormig tympaan dragen) en een rondbogige poort met zwikken, gedragen door gebosseerde pijlers. De poort kan worden afgesloten met een gietijzeren sierhekwerk. Tegen het voordakschild is een kajuit uitgemetseld met tympaan en een houten hijsbalk. Het muurwerk van de verdieping met grote van lijstwerk voorziene vensters, is gestuct. Het overige muurwerk bestaat uit metselwerk van bruin bezande baksteen. Waardering Badhuis, opgetrokken in een monumentale eclectische bouwstijl met decoratieve kenmerken van de neo-Renaissance en het neo-classicisme naar ontwerp van A. Schram de Jong, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde. Met de naburige synagoge is het gebouw tevens van sociaal-historisch belang vanwege de grote herinneringswaarde aan de voormalige Joodse buurt in de binnenstad van Groningen. Introduction BATH HOUSE, named Rabbinaatshuis, situated on the corner of the Nieuwstad and the Folkingestraat near the synagogue of Groningen, built in 1890 as a bath house with bathmaster's dwelling, shop-house and meeting hall for the Jewish community after design by director of public works A. The rectangular building volume is alternated with facades, pilasters and moulding, which designate the three parts of the building: the former shop front with round-arch windows and pilasters with mirrors on the corner, a wing three window bays wide on the Nieuwstad and at the far left a narrow gatehouse risalit. The front facade of the shop section, facing the Folkingestraat, is stuccoed with moulding. The side facade on the Folkingestraat is divided in two by means of pilasters. On the upper floor is a large three-part window, flanked by two blind niches and topped with a segmental tympanum. In the gable top, formed by a rectangular wall plate and triangular fillings with stucco, a round window is placed. The adjoining wing on the Nieuwstad has three moulded cross windows on the ground floor. The moulding continues as a parapet at the upper-floor windows. These windows have round arch drums with painted floral decoration. The gatehouse risalit projects half a brick width forward. The gate consists of an aedicula structure (pilasters on high plinths, bearing a cornice with segmental tympanum) and a round-arched gateway with voussoirs, carried by bossed pillars. The gate can be closed with a cast-iron ornamental grille. Against the front roof-covering is a cabin built out with tympanum and a wooden hoist beam. The wall of the upper floor with large moulded windows is stuccoed. The remaining brickwork consists of masonry of brown sanded brick. Valuation Bath house, erected in a monumental eclectic architectural style with decorative characteristics of the neo-Renaissance and neo-classicism after design by A. Schram de Jong, of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value. With the neighbouring synagogue, the building is likewise of socio-historical importance because of the great commemorative value relating to the former Jewish quarter in the city centre of Groningen.
