Inleiding
HOOFDPOSTKANTOOR, gesitueerd in een zichtas over het A-kerkhof op de hoek van de Munnekeholm en de Schuitemakersstraat, gebouwd in 1909 in opdracht van de PTT naar ontwerp van rijksbouwmeester C.H. Peters in een neo-gotische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is thans nog steeds in gebruik als postkantoor. De uitbreidingen van later datum vallen buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een hoog opgaand zadeldak, gedekt met leien (Maasdak). De gevels zijn opgemetseld van roodbruine baksteen en sterk ritmisch geleed door liseenachtige muurdammen. Hiertussen bevinden zich de vensteropeningen. Op de begane grond zijn de vensters segmentboogvormig gesloten en voorzien van houten, driedelige kozijnen met tussenkalven. De rechtgesloten vensters op de verdieping bevatten segmentboogvormige ontlastingsbogen. Alle vensters hebben afzaatvormige hardstenen waterdorpels. De risalerende hoekpartij is voorzien van hoge topgevels en een overhoeks geplaatste ingang met trap. Boven de ingang bevindt zich een forse erker met hoge, segmentboogvormig gesloten vensters. De diep uitgemetselde consoles waarop deze erker rust, vormen met het tongewelf hiertussen een portiek boven de ingang. De venstervelden worden afgesloten door een neo-gotisch spitsboogfries. De topgevels bevatten terugliggende ranke vensteropeningen en blindnissen. Enkelvoudige en gepaarde schalken ondersteunen de trapsgewijs verspringende veldbeëindigingen. De gevels zijn voorts verlevendigd met speklagen. Voor neg- en sluitblokken, evenals voor de afdekkingen van topgevels en gedecoreerde consoles, is natuursteen gebruikt. De dakvlakken zijn voorzien van kajuiten, afgewisseld door dakkapellen met decoratieve windveren. De kappen worden omzoomd door een gemetselde balustrade met pinakels. Inwendig nog van belang de geornamenteerde glazen overkapping van de hal.

CHIEF POST OFFICE, situated in a sightline across the A-kerkhof on the corner of the Munnekeholm and the Schuitemakersstraat, built in 1909 on commission of the PTT according to the design of state architect C.H. Peters in a neo-Gothic building style. The building is currently still in use as a post office. Extensions of a later date fall outside the protection.
Description
The building is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys under a high gabled roof, covered with slate (Maas slate). The facades are built of reddish-brown brick and strongly articulated rhythmically by pilaster-like wall sections. Within these are the window openings. On the ground floor the windows are segmental-arch shaped and provided with wooden, three-part frames with intermediate transoms. The straight-headed windows on the storey contain segmental-arch shaped relieving arches. All windows have drip-mouldings in the form of natural stone. The projecting corner section is provided with high apex gables and an entrance placed diagonally across the corner with stairs. Above the entrance is a substantial bay window with high, segmental-arch shaped windows. The deeply recessed corbels on which this bay window rests form, with the barrel vault between them, a portico above the entrance. The window fields are closed off by a neo-Gothic pointed-arch frieze. The apex gables contain recessed slender window openings and blind niches. Simple and paired braces support the stepped staggered field endings. The facades are furthermore enlivened with brick bands. For caps and closing blocks, as well as for the coverings of apex gables and decorated corbels, natural stone has been used. The roof surfaces are provided with cabins, alternated by dormer windows with decorative weathervanes. The roof structures are bordered by a stone balustrade with finials. Internally of importance the ornamented glass covering of the hall.
Evaluation
Chief Post Office, built according to the design of state architect C.H. Peters in a neo-Gothic style characteristic of government buildings from around the turn of the century. Of general importance:
