Inleiding GRAFMONUMENT VAN DE FAMILIE SCHOLTEN, vrijstaand gesitueerd op de statige Zuiderbegraafplaats (aanleg uit 1828) in het midden nabij de hoofdkruising, ontworpen in 1892 in opdracht van de bekende Groninger aardappelmeel- en strokartonfabrikant W.A. Scholten (1819-1892). Het monument wordt omzoomd door een ijzeren hekwerk tussen vierkante, gietijzeren balusters. De niet van rijkswege voor bescherming aangewezen Zuiderbegraafplaats bezit nog een aantal interessante en waardevolle grafmonumenten. Het grafmonument van de familie Scholten is in 1992 gerestaureerd in opdracht van het J.B. Scholtensfonds. Omschrijving Het grafmonument bestaat uit een grafkelder, die wordt bekroond door een hoge, vierzijdige opbouw in de vorm van een tombe. De tombe bezit een basement van lichtroze marmer en verjongt zich in drie delen en bestaat uit roze en grijs marmeren platen. De hoeken worden geaccentueerd door zware pilasters die ter hoogte van de aanzet van het bovenste deel worden bekroond door koperen urnen. De tombe is aan alle zijden voorzien van marmeren herinneringsplaquettes met namen van overleden familieleden en rijk versierd met koperen guirlandes, toortsen, palmetten en ovalen reliëfs met voorstellingen, die de handel, nijverheid en industrie symboliseren. Aan de noordzijde verschaft een zware koperen deur met rouwkrans toegang tot de grafkelder. Hierboven is in het bovenste deel van de tombe een rondboognis aangebracht waarin een treurende vrouwenfiguur is geplaatst met de buste van W.A. Scholten in haar handen. Aan de zuidzijde is een liggende tombe van roze marmer uitgebouwd met koperen ventilatieroosters waarin bijen zijn uitgebeeld.
