Inleiding WATERTOREN, geheel vrijstaand gesitueerd in de noordwesthoek van de Schildersbuurt aan het Reitdiep op de hoek van de Dr. C. Hofstede de Grootkade en de Herman Colleniusstraat, gebouwd in 1911-1912 in opdracht van het Waterleidingbedrijf van de gemeente Groningen naar ontwerp van directeur gemeentewerken J.A. Mulock Houwer in een traditionele stijl. De toren bevatte twee plaatijzeren reservoirs boven elkaar: één uit 1912 en één die in 1925 erbij is geplaatst. Het bovenste reservoir is als gevolg van oorlogshandelingen in 1945 geheel verwoest. De watertoren is thans nog steeds in gebruik. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken vanuit een achtzijdige plattegrond uit roodbruine baksteen. De diameter bedraagt circa negentien meter en de hoogte 56 meter. De baksteenmantel is op diverse hoogtes sterk geleed. Te onderscheiden zijn: een circa zes meter hoge begane grondverdieping met plint met een rondgesloten toegang met dubbele houten deuren aan de noordzijde; de begane grond gaat over in een zestienzijdige bouwlaag waarvan acht vlakken zijn voorzien van een drietal hoge vensters; vervolgens een cilindervormig schachtdeel met lisenen. In acht van de ontstane velden zijn, corresponderend met het grondplan, op twee niveau's rechtgesloten vensters geplaatst. Op de schacht is een 'gedrukte' zestienzijdige laag uitgekraagd, die schijnbaar wordt gedragen door een natuurstenen rand met voluten ter plaatse van de lisenen. Deze verdiepingslaag kreeg in acht velden segmentboogvormig gesloten vensters en in de overige velden suggesties daarvan in baksteen. In de bovenste, wederom uitkragende, cylindervormige torenlaag bevinden zich zestien smalle, rechtgesloten vensters. Een decoratief fries van gele en rode baksteen sluit de toren af, die wordt bekroond door een tentdak met lantaarn en pinakel. Aan vier zijden is het dakvlak voorzien van dakkapellen met schilddakjes en pirons. In deze kapellen bevinden zich hoge vensters die het fries doorbreken. Introduction WATER TOWER, wholly detached and situated in the northwestern corner of the Schildersbuurt at the Reitdiep on the corner of the Dr. C. Hofstede de Grootkade and the Herman Colleniusstraat, built in 1911-1912 on commission of the Water Supply Company of the municipality of Groningen after design by director of municipal works J.A. Mulock Houwer in a traditional style. The tower contained two sheet iron reservoirs one above the other: one from 1912 and one installed in 1925. The upper reservoir was entirely destroyed as a result of military action in 1945. The water tower is still in use today. Description The building is constructed on an octagonal ground plan from reddish-brown brick. The diameter measures approximately nineteen metres and the height 56 metres. The brick envelope is strongly articulated at various heights. To be distinguished are: an approximately six-metre-high ground storey with plinth with a closed-off entrance with double wooden doors on the north side; the ground floor transitions into a sixteen-sided storey of which eight planes are provided with three tall windows; subsequently a cylindrical shaft section with pilasters. In eight of the resulting fields, corresponding with the ground plan, windows closed with straight angles are placed at two levels. On the shaft a 'compressed' sixteen-sided storey is cantilevered out, which appears to be supported by a natural stone band with volutes at the location of the pilasters. This storey level received in eight fields windows closed with segmental arches and in the remaining fields suggestions thereof in brick. In the uppermost, again cantilevered, cylindrical tower storey sixteen narrow, windows closed with straight angles are located. A decorative frieze of yellow and red brick closes off the tower, which is crowned by a tent roof with lantern and spire. On four sides the roof plane is provided with roof dormers with hipped roof dormers and cresting. In these dormers are located tall windows which break through the frieze. In the masonry of the tower natural stone has been applied in various places. Above the entrance door is a coat of arms in natural stone. Valuation Water tower, traditional in conception with fine formal design in which its function is strongly expressed, of general importance on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, on account of its value for the history of industrial architecture as a well-preserved monument of enterprise and technology and on account of its striking position in the urban image.
