Inleiding
GASTHUIS, genaamd Typografengasthuis, vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de Petrus Campersingel en bestaande uit 47 hofwoningen waarvan zes beneden- en bovenwoningen verbonden door een poort zijn gelegen aan de openbare weg en 35 aan de daarachtergelegen hof met een langwerpige vorm van 85 x 17 meter, gebouwd in 1903 in opdracht van het College van Boekverkopers naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect K.H. Holthuis in een traditioneel-ambachtelijke bouwstijl. Het één meter brede voorerf is betegeld en omzoomd met een (deels nog aanwezig) ijzeren hekwerk uit de bouwtijd. De hof heeft in het midden een langwerpig, ovaalvormig perk met gazon en struiken. De begane grond van nr. 37 (het rechter hoekpand aan de singel) was oorspronkelijk een winkel. De woningen zijn thans nog als (particuliere) woningen in gebruik.
Omschrijving
De woningen aan de straatzijde tellen twee bouwlagen en zijn drie traveeën breed onder een dwarsgeplaatst schilddak, belegd met een Friese golfpan, met elk een uitgebouwde kajuit met een trapgevel. De gevels worden afgesloten door een geprofileerde houten bakgoot. Alle woningen zijn opgetrokken op rechthoekige plattegronden uit rode baksteen op een trasraam van gesinterde steen. De gevels zijn verlevendigd met stuc dorpelbanden. De vensters hebben een T-roedeverdeling en verhoogde segmentbogen met siermetselwerk in de boogtrommels. De opgemetselde kajuiten hebben rondboogvensters. De hofwoningen tellen één bouwlaag onder een omlopend schilddak, belegd met een zwarte Friese golfpan. De trapgevels van de kajuiten zijn afgedekt met beton. Zeer karakteristiek zijn de circa 1.50 meter hoge schoorstenen. De hofwoningen hebben T-vensters met strekken en houten paneeldeuren met een gietijzeren rooster. In het midden van de gevelwand aan de Petrus Campersingel bevindt zich de TOEGANGSPOORT naar de hof van vier meter breed met een geprofileerde rondboog op negblokken van gietbeton en trappen. Op de rondboog de naam van het gasthuis met de stichtingsdatum. Op het midden van de boog in stuc een rechthoekig veld met een opengeslagen boek met de spreuk: 'Uit Haarlems Bloemhof ging het licht op over de aarde'. Het geheel is bekroond met een schilddragende leeuw. In de noordwand van de poort is een natuurstenen gedenkplaat. Aan weerszijden in het midden zijn twee hanglantaarns bevestigd.

Gasthuis, bestaande uit hofwoningen met centrale toegangspoort, gebouwd als Typografengasthuis naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect K.H. ALMSHOUSE, called Typographers Almshouse, standing freely situated on the Petrus Campersingel and consisting of 47 almshouse dwellings of which six ground and upper-storey dwellings connected by a gate are situated on the public road and 35 in the rear courtyard with an elongated shape of 85 x 17 metres, built in 1903 commissioned by the College of Booksellers to the design of Groningen architect K.H. Description
The dwellings on the street side have two storeys and are three bays wide under a transversely positioned hipped roof, covered with Frisian corrugated tile, each with a projecting glazed room with a stepped gable. The facades are finished with a profiled wooden gutter. All dwellings are erected on rectangular floor plans of red brick on a foundation of sintered stone. The facades are enlivened with stucco sill bands. The windows have T-glazing bars and raised segmental arches with decorative brickwork in the arch drums. The brick-built glazed rooms have round-arch windows. The courtyard dwellings have one storey under a continuous hipped roof, covered with black Frisian corrugated tile. The stepped gables of the glazed rooms are covered with concrete. Very characteristic are the approximately 1.50 metre high chimneys. The courtyard dwellings have T-windows with stretches and wooden panelled doors with cast iron grilles. In the middle of the facade wall on the Petrus Campersingel is the ENTRANCE GATE to the courtyard four metres wide with a profiled round arch on concrete blocks and steps. On the round arch the name of the almshouse with the foundation date. On the middle of the arch in stucco a rectangular field with an open book with the inscription: 'From Haarlem's Flower Garden the light went forth over the earth'. The whole is crowned with a shield-bearing lion. In the north wall of the gate is a natural stone memorial plaque. On either side in the middle two hanging lanterns are attached.
